Taiwan’s rainy climate makes riding in the rain almost a required course for every cyclist. Whether you get caught in a sudden downpour mid-ride or face steady drizzle on your commute, mastering the safety knowledge of rainy-day riding not only protects you from accidents, it also helps you keep your riding confidence through changeable weather.

Assessing the Risks of Rainy-Day Riding

Before deciding whether to head out in the rain, first understand the main risks you’ll face:

Road Grip Drops Sharply

The friction coefficient of dry asphalt is roughly 0.7 to 0.8, but it drops to 0.4–0.5 once wet. That means your braking distance increases by at least 50%, and the maximum lean angle you can safely take through a corner must also be reduced significantly.

Even more dangerous is the first 15 minutes after rain starts. Accumulated oil residue, dust, and rubber particles on the road surface mix with the rain to form an extremely slick film — at this point the friction coefficient can drop below 0.2, almost as slippery as ice.

Visibility Is Severely Reduced

In the rain, it’s not just that you can’t see well — other road users can’t see you well either. Drivers’ field of view shrinks by about 30% in rain, and combined with wiper blind spots and water droplets on side mirrors, the chance of a cyclist being noticed drops sharply.

Hidden Road Hazards Increase

Standing water can hide potholes, uneven manhole covers, loose gravel, and other hazards. You can’t tell whether a puddle is covering flat pavement or a pothole deep enough to bring you down.

Preparing Your Rainy-Day Gear

Tires: The Most Critical Safety Equipment

The most important gear adjustment for rainy-day riding is your tires. Here are concrete recommendations:

  • Lower tire pressure by 10–15%: For example, with 25c road tires you’d normally run 100 psi — in the rain, drop to around 85–90 psi. Lower pressure increases the tire’s contact patch and provides better grip
  • Tire width: If your frame allows it, wider tires (28c or 30c) are considerably safer than narrow ones in the rain
  • Tread pattern: Fully slick tires perform worse on wet surfaces than tires with shallow tread. If you ride in the rain often, consider a dedicated wet-weather tire

Braking System

  • Disc brakes perform far better than rim brakes in the rain. If you plan to ride in wet conditions often, a disc brake bike is the safer choice
  • Rim brake users: Braking performance can drop by more than 60% in the rain. Always brake earlier, and get into the habit of “pre-tapping” the brakes lightly so the pads first wipe the water film off the rim
  • Check your brake pad wear — rain accelerates pad wear considerably

Lighting and Visibility

In the rain, lighting isn’t optional — it’s mandatory:

  • Anti-fog eyewear: Use clear or yellow-tinted lenses with an anti-fog coating. If your glasses fog up badly, it’s better to take them off
  • Gloves: Wet hands slip easily on the handlebar. Waterproof gloves, or at minimum gloves with good grip, are essential

Rainy-Day Riding Techniques

Adjusting Your Braking Technique

The core principle of braking in the rain is early, gentle, and progressive:

  1. Start braking at least 50% farther from the point where you need to slow down
  2. Use a “pulsing” technique instead of holding the brakes continuously, to avoid locking up and skidding the tires
  3. Adjust the front-to-rear brake ratio to 5:5 or 4:6 (front:rear) to reduce the risk of the front wheel locking up
  4. Slow down early on descents — don’t wait until right before a corner to brake hard

Cornering Strategy

Cornering is where accidents are most likely to happen in the rain:

  • Reduce entry speed: At least 30% slower than on dry roads
  • Reduce lean angle: On dry roads you might lean 30–35 degrees; in the rain, don’t exceed 20 degrees
  • Separate body and bike lean: Lean your body more than the bike, keeping the bike as upright as possible
  • Avoid braking or accelerating mid-corner: Complete all speed adjustments on the straight sections
  • Watch the road surface: The outside of a corner usually has more gravel and standing water — choose the cleaner line

Road Hazards You Must Avoid

The following surfaces become dramatically more dangerous in the rain:

  • Manhole covers and steel plates: Wet metal surfaces have a friction coefficient near zero. Always ride around them or cross them in a straight line — never brake or turn on top of them
  • Road markings (white lines, yellow lines): Painted road markings are just as slippery in the rain
  • Piles of fallen leaves: Wet leaves act like a natural lubricant
  • Colored pavement: Red-painted bus lane surfaces and green-painted bike lane surfaces are more slippery than regular asphalt in the rain
  • Tiled surfaces: Tiled sidewalks are extremely dangerous in the rain

Handling Standing Water

  • If you can clearly see the bottom and the depth is under 5 cm, you can cross slowly in a straight line
  • If you can’t see the bottom of a puddle, riding around it is the only correct choice
  • After crossing standing water, your rims and brake pads will be wet — tap the brakes lightly right away to restore braking power

Rainy-Day Route Planning

Smart route choices can significantly reduce the risk of rainy-day riding:

  • Avoid high-speed descents: Especially mountain descents with continuous corners
  • Choose routes with less traffic: Spray from passing vehicles in the rain can seriously affect your visibility
  • Avoid low-lying sections prone to flooding: If you know the route well, avoid known flood-prone spots
  • Shorten your ride distance: Rainy-day riding takes a bigger toll on your energy and mental focus than dry-weather riding, so it’s wise to shorten your route accordingly

Post-Rain Bike Care

Maintenance after a wet ride matters just as much:

  1. Dry the bike as soon as possible, paying special attention to the chain, derailleur, and braking system
  2. Re-lubricate the chain: Rain washes away chain lube — a wet-condition chain lube is recommended
  3. Check the brake pads: Riding in the rain accelerates wear, so check whether they need replacing
  4. Turn the bike over to drain water: Let any water trapped inside the frame tubes drain out
  5. Wash the bike: Rainwater mixed with road grime can corrode components

When You Shouldn’t Ride

The highest principle of defensive riding is knowing when not to ride:

  • When a thunderstorm warning is issued: A carbon fiber frame offers zero protection against a lightning strike
  • When there’s significant standing water and heavy rain is ongoing
  • When winds exceed force 6 or higher: Crosswinds can knock you straight over
  • In dense fog or heavy rain with visibility under 50 meters

Riding in the rain isn’t off-limits, but it demands more preparation, more caution, and more patience. Once you’ve mastered the right knowledge and technique, you’ll be able to ride safely in most rainy conditions. But also remember — no training ride or race is ever worth risking your life for.
