But the used market is also full of pitfalls: hidden cracks, concealed crash damage, and even counterfeits. Homework Before You Buy
1. Confirm the Size You Need
Before you start searching for a used frameset, you must know exactly what size you need. Check the geometry chart for the target model and confirm that the Stack and Reach values meet your fitting requirements. There is no return or exchange on used framesets—buying the wrong size means you’ve bought the wrong size.
2. Research the Target Model’s History
Before making a move, understand the background of this frameset:
- Production year: Carbon fiber technology advances rapidly; a top-tier frameset from five years ago may not be as good as today’s mid-range frameset
- Known issues: Some models have known design flaws (e.g., areas prone to cracking). Google “[model name] crack” or “[model name] recall”
- Parts compatibility: Confirm that the headset specification, bottom bracket specification, seatpost diameter, and front/rear axle specifications are compatible with your existing parts
- Original retail price: Knowing the new price is essential to judging whether the used price is reasonable

- The junction of the head tube and down tube
- Around the bottom bracket shell
- The junction of the seat stays and seat tube
- The underside of the down tube (a common area for stone chip impacts)

Structural Inspection
- Fork inspection: Observe from the front and side for any bending or asymmetry
- Rear triangle alignment: Use a straight metal rod to measure the distance from the left and right rear dropouts to the head tube; both sides should be equal
- Thread inspection: Check whether the bottle cage screw holes and derailleur hanger screw holes are intact
- Steerer tube condition: Check the top of the steerer tube for star-shaped cracks (caused by an incorrect preload cap contact point when the steerer is too short)
Aluminum Alloy Frameset Inspection
Damage to aluminum alloy framesets is usually more obvious than carbon fiber, but there are still hidden risks:
- Weld inspection: Carefully check all welds for cracks
- Dent assessment: Small dents are usually harmless, but deep dents (exceeding 10% of the tube diameter) may affect structural integrity
- Corrosion signs: White powdery oxide indicates the aluminum alloy is corroding
- Seized seatpost: Confirm the seatpost can be pulled out smoothly (galvanic corrosion between an aluminum frame and aluminum seatpost is a common problem)
Steel Frameset Inspection
- Degree of rust: The most critical check. Surface rust can be treated, but severe rust inside the tube walls means the frame is scrap
- Dents: Dents in steel tubes are easier to repair than aluminum (they can be pushed back out with specialized tools)
- Lug condition: Check for signs of separation at brazed lugs
- Internal rust: Use a flashlight through the seatpost opening to check the extent of internal corrosion
Titanium Frameset Inspection
- Weld quality: Titanium welding quality varies enormously. Good welds should be uniform with regular fish-scale patterns
- Weld discoloration: Pure silver or light gold indicates good shielding during welding; blue or purple is acceptable; gray or white indicates severe oxidation (which may affect strength)
- Scratches: Scratches on titanium are usually only a surface issue and do not affect structure
