Completely lying on the couch doing nothing? Probably too passive. An easy 30-minute ride? Probably too boring. That’s where a hike might be your best active recovery option.

Before diving into the benefits of hiking, let’s first understand how Active Recovery works.

After you complete a high-intensity workout, your body is carrying out multiple recovery processes:

  • Clearing metabolic waste: Lactate, hydrogen ions, and other metabolic byproducts need to be transported and metabolized

  2. Able to converse easily: If you’re too breathless to talk, you’re walking too fast

Gear Recommendations

The most common mistake cyclists make when transitioning to hiking is wearing the wrong shoes. A proper pair of hiking or trail shoes is a necessary investment. Additionally:
