Detailed Route Description

Section 1: Dongshi to Henglingshan Tunnel (0–15 km)

Starting from the Dongshi starting point, the initial section is flat, running alongside a tributary of the Dajia River, flanked by low-altitude agricultural areas and orchards. This section serves as a warm-up zone, allowing riders to settle into a rhythm before officially entering the forest road. After passing through the Henglingshan Tunnel, the terrain begins to rise noticeably, and the surrounding vegetation gradually shifts from low-altitude agricultural landscapes to subtropical evergreen broadleaf forests.

Section 2: Henglingshan to Anmashan Lodge (15–30 km)

This is the most consistent section of the entire route in terms of gradient, maintaining an average slope of around 5%, testing riders’ aerobic endurance and pedaling efficiency. Along the way, you can see magnificent Taiwan fir forests. The air is fresh and humid, and thin mist often lingers in the early morning, creating a scenery that feels like a fairyland. Reeves’ muntjac or Formosan macaques occasionally appear on both sides of the road, offering excellent opportunities for wildlife observation.

Section 3: Anmashan Lodge to the Finish (30–49 km)

This final section is the toughest challenge of the entire route, with some sections exceeding 8% gradient and the road beginning to feature more sharp switchbacks. After surpassing 2,000 meters in elevation, temperatures drop noticeably, so bringing warm clothing is recommended. Upon reaching the Dasyueshan Forest Recreation Area entrance, the view opens up dramatically—on clear days, you can gaze far across the Dajia River Valley and the Taichung Basin, a magnificent sight that leaves you in awe.

Best Riding Seasons

  • Spring (March–May): Mild climate, fresh green buds sprouting along both sides of the forest road—the best time for capturing natural scenery
  • Autumn (September–November): Clear air, high visibility, with maple foliage in some sections
  • Avoid the summer typhoon season: During the July–September typhoon season, the forest road may be closed due to heavy rain; be sure to check road conditions before departing
  • Winter: High-elevation sections may have fog or low temperatures; extra caution is required

Supply and Logistics Information

Supply points along Dasyueshan Forest Road are extremely scarce. It is recommended to complete all supply preparations in Dongshi town:

  • Water: Carry at least 3 liters; only Anmashan Lodge in the middle section offers water refills
  • Food: Prepare enough energy supplies in Dongshi before departing
  • Communication: Mobile signal is poor in some sections; it is advisable to inform family and friends of your itinerary
  • Spare tubes and tools: The forest road surface sometimes has falling rocks or fine gravel, so the risk of flats is higher

Descent Considerations

The descent on Dasyueshan Forest Road is equally challenging—a continuous 49 km downhill stretch is a major test for your braking system. Recommendations:

  1. Stop periodically to let disc brakes cool down to avoid brake failure
  2. Do not descend too fast; the road is narrow with the risk of oncoming traffic
  3. Watch for oncoming vehicles, especially large tour buses
  4. Confirm the braking system is functioning properly before descending

Riding Advice

This route is suitable for intermediate to advanced riders with some climbing experience. Beginners are advised not to tackle it alone; riding with companions is best. Since the entire ride takes considerable time (uphill approx. 4–6 hours), it is recommended to depart at 4–5 AM to ensure completion before dark. Carrying ample energy supplies and warm clothing is key to completing this pristine forest climbing journey.
