I helped him restructure his schedule—strength in the evening, high-intensity cardio in the morning or moved to another day, explosive power sessions on a separate day when he felt at his best, while also boosting the protein in his meal prep and making sure he slept well after weekend long rides. Three months later, his climbing power was back on an upward trajectory, his squat broke through the plateau he’d been stuck at, and what surprised him most was that the “explosive” feeling when sprinting out of the saddle had returned.

What he did isn’t mysterious—it was simply no longer letting the two types of training collide head-on at the same point in time.

Strength and endurance were never natural enemies. They are two specialized teams within your body, but on the same field and at the same moment, they can get in each other’s way.
