If you’re a typical office worker (currently around 5,000–7,000 steps a day)

You’re already on the edge of the health sweet spot.

  • Goal: consistently maintain 7,000–8,000 steps.
  • Key upgrade: add “intensity”—deliberately walk one stretch of your day fast enough to get slightly breathless.
  • Tuck steps into your commute and lunch break; no need to carve out extra time.
  • Don’t obsess over hitting 10,000. Save that willpower for sleep and diet.

If you’re an active person (already steadily above 8,000 steps)

Your walking volume is already excellent. What comes next is “quality” and “variety.”

  • Just maintain your step count; no need to force more for the sake of the number.
  • Add strength training two to three times a week to protect muscle mass and metabolism.
  • If you want more challenge, swap some walking for hill climbs, hiking, cycling, or swimming to give your body different stimuli.

If you have a chronic condition or are unsure about your health status

  • See a doctor and get an individualized assessment first—this is the most important step.
  • You’ll typically start at a very conservative volume and closely monitor your body’s response.
  • If you’re on medication, be mindful of how exercise affects your blood sugar and blood pressure, and keep communicating with your healthcare team.
  • Remember: for you, “safe, consistent, and sustainable” matters far more than “how many steps.”

Conclusion: Bring the number back to “getting moving”

Back to the student who sent me that screenshot at the start of this article. I helped him establish his baseline (about 5,800 steps a day), set up a gradual plan of “add 1,000 every two weeks, target 7,500,” and taught him to take a brisk ten-minute walk after lunch to break up sitting. Three months later, he stopped staring at whether he’d hit 10,000 and instead told me: “Coach, I don’t get winded climbing that long MRT staircase anymore, and I’m sleeping better at night.”—That’s what we’re really after, not the number on a screen.

“10,000 steps a day” is a catchy slogan that got many people moving—that’s its merit. But it was never a scientific threshold, and that’s the truth we should restore. What science actually tells us is a gentler, more practical message: You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to start, and walking a little more genuinely makes you better off. By around 7,000 steps, you’ve already captured most of the benefit. The rest is turning it into a habit that can stay with you for years.

Find your baseline, set a goal so small it can’t fail, and start with the next stretch of road ahead of you. Every step you take counts.
