The Banana Road of Qishan: A Cycling Memory of Southern Taiwan’s Agricultural Culture
Qishan District in Kaohsiung City was once an important base for Taiwan’s banana exports. During the Japanese colonial era, Qishan bananas were sold as far as Japan, bringing substantial foreign exchange earnings to Taiwan and earning the region the title “Kingdom of Bananas.” Today, Qishan retains its complete Japanese-era streetscape, and banana farming culture remains vibrant. Cycling through this historic agricultural town is an excellent way to deeply explore Taiwan’s rural culture.

Qishan Old Street: Architectural Heritage from the Japanese Era
Qishan Old Street is the starting point of the route and the most important cultural attraction of the entire ride. The street preserves a large number of pseudo-Baroque buildings from the Japanese colonial era, with red brick walls, arcades, and intricate relief decorations that make visitors feel as if they have traveled back to Taiwan a century ago.
The “stone arch” old houses on Qishan Old Street are the most representative architectural cluster and one of the best-preserved Japanese-era commercial districts in Taiwan. The “Qishan Banana Ice” sold on the street is made with locally grown bananas and is a signature delicacy that must be tried when visiting Qishan.
Cycling Through Banana Plantations
After leaving the old street, the route enters the agricultural areas surrounding Qishan. The banana plantations here cover vast areas, with different varieties of banana trees arranged in neat rows—from dwarf varieties to tall Northern Bananas—forming a spectacular agricultural landscape.
The main banana varieties in Taiwan include:
- Northern Banana (Bei Jiao): The most common variety, high in sweetness with a fine texture
- Honey Banana (Mi Jiao): Also known as Golden Fingers, smaller in size with extremely high sweetness
- Plantain (Ba Jiao): A traditional variety with firmer flesh, often used in cooked dishes
Farmers welcome cyclists to visit the banana plantations, and some farms offer banana-picking experiences, allowing visitors to understand the complete process from planting to harvest.
Qishan Mountain Cycling Challenge
For riders seeking a climbing challenge, Qishan Mountain offers a suitable short climb. Ascending approximately 400 meters from downtown Qishan to the summit of Qishan Mountain, riders can enjoy panoramic views of the Qishan Plain and the Meinong agricultural area. Near the summit, there is a temple that provides rest space and drinking water facilities.
Meinong Hakka Settlement Extension
Qishan is adjacent to Meinong District, one of the regions in Taiwan where Hakka culture is best preserved. A ride of approximately 15 kilometers from Qishan reaches Meinong, with agricultural landscapes of the Kaohsiung hills along the way. Meinong’s tobacco leaf culture, paper umbrella craftsmanship, and Hakka flat rice noodles make this extension ride even richer.
Best Cycling Seasons
- Autumn/Winter (October–March): Kaohsiung winters are warm and dry, making this the most comfortable cycling season
- Spring (March–May): Farmlands are lush green and the climate is pleasant
- Summer (June–September): Hot and scorching; riding at noon is not recommended, but early morning or evening rides are still possible
Qishan Local Cuisine
Enjoying local delicacies in Qishan after the ride is the perfect ending to this rural cycling trip:
- Qishan Banana Ice: A must-try local frozen treat
- Qishan Traditional Cake: A specialty pastry made with bananas
- Qishan Beef Soup: A famous beef dish in Kaohsiung, with several long-established shops in Qishan
- Qishan Pork Knuckle: A popular local delicacy, braised to perfection
