If you cut back on post-training recovery fuel, the kid just recovers a bit slower. But if you chronically cut into the portion meant for growth, the cost is paid in height, bone health, and endocrine function—and once the developmental window closes, you can’t get it back.

1.2 What Is “Energy Availability” (EA)

Here I want to introduce the most important concept in sports nutrition over the past decade: Energy Availability (EA).

Simply put, it asks: After subtracting the energy expended through exercise from the energy you take in today, how much is left for your body to “live and grow”?

The post-training period and dinner are exactly when the body needs nutrients most for repair and growth—portions should be sufficient, with both carbohydrates and protein.
