Complete Electronic Shifting Troubleshooting Manual: Common SRAM AXS and Shimano Di2 Problems and Fixes
Electronic shifting systems have become remarkably reliable, but occasional issues still crop up. The good news is that most problems can be resolved with simple diagnostics and a bit of hands-on troubleshooting. This guide rounds up the most common failure symptoms for the two major electronic shifting systems and how to fix them.
Common SRAM AXS Issues
Issue 1: Pressing the Paddle but the Derailleur Doesn’t Respond

This is the most frequently reported issue among AXS users. Here are the likely causes and troubleshooting steps:
Step 1: Check the Battery Level
- Press the function button on the derailleur and watch the LED
- Green light: battery is healthy
- Flashing red light: low battery, needs charging
- No light: battery may be completely dead or making poor contact
Step 2: Reinstall the Battery
- Press the battery release button and remove the battery
- Check the contacts for dirt or oxidation
- Wipe the contacts clean with a dry cloth
- Reinstall the battery and confirm you hear a “click”
Step 3: Re-pair the Components
If the battery is fine but there’s still no response, the wireless pairing may have been lost:
- Press and hold the function buttons on both the front and rear derailleurs simultaneously for 5 seconds
- The LED will start flashing, indicating pairing mode
- Press the pairing button on the shifter paddle
- A solid green LED indicates successful pairing
Step 4: Firmware Reset
If none of the above works:
- Remove both batteries
- Wait 30 seconds
- Reinstall the rear derailleur battery first
- Then reinstall the front derailleur battery
- Check and update the firmware version via the AXS App
Issue 2: Inaccurate Shifting, Skipping Gears, or Unusual Noise
Electronic shifting is far more precise than mechanical shifting, but it still depends on correct mechanical setup.
Possible Causes:
- Rear derailleur mounted at the wrong angle
- Bent derailleur hanger
- Worn chain
- Worn cassette or chainrings
Diagnostic Steps:
-
Fine-Tune via the AXS App
- Open the AXS App → select the rear derailleur → Micro Adjust
- Adjust one click at a time and test the shifting
- Adjusting in the + direction: moves the guide pulley toward the larger cogs
- Adjusting in the - direction: moves the guide pulley toward the smaller cogs
-
Check for a Bent Derailleur Hanger
- Use a hanger alignment tool to check
- SRAM AXS uses the UDH (Universal Derailleur Hanger), which is relatively resistant to bending
- Still worth checking after any impact
-
Confirm the B-Tension Setting
- Shift to the largest cog
- The gap between the guide pulley and the cog should fall within the manufacturer’s recommended range
- Too close causes contact; too far degrades shift quality
Issue 3: Unusual Feel from the Shifter Paddle Buttons
Stuck or Unresponsive Buttons:
- Likely caused by internal moisture condensation (common in winter)
- Leave the shifter at room temperature for a while to dry out
- Use low-pressure air to blow out the interior
- Avoid using lubricants like WD-40, which can damage the internal electronics
No Tactile Feedback When Pressed:
- The button spring may have worn out
- Send it back to your dealer to have the shifter assembly replaced
Common Shimano Di2 Issues
Issue 1: No Shifting at All
Step 1: Check the Battery Level
- 12-speed systems: hold the front derailleur button for 2 seconds and check the LED
- Green: battery > 50%
- Red: battery < 25%
- No light: dead battery or a fault
- 11-speed systems: press the button on the junction box and check the indicator light
Step 2: Check the Connections (11-speed wired systems)
- Confirm all E-Tube connectors are firmly seated
- Check the wiring for kinks or damage
- Unplug the connectors, clean them with contact cleaner, and reconnect
Step 3: System Reset
12-speed system reset procedure:
- Make sure both derailleurs are in the smallest gear
- Press and hold both the front and rear derailleur buttons simultaneously for 10 seconds
- Release once the LED flashes rapidly
- The system will initialize automatically
11-speed system reset procedure:
- Disconnect the battery
- Wait 10 seconds
- Reconnect the battery
- Check the system using the E-Tube Project software
Issue 2: Delayed or Sluggish Shifting
Normal Di2 shifting should be instantaneous. If you notice a noticeable delay, possible causes include:
Low Battery:
- Di2 slows shifting speed at low battery levels to conserve power
- Check whether performance returns to normal after charging
Outdated Firmware:
- Check for and install firmware updates via the E-Tube Ride App
- Firmware updates often include shifting logic optimizations
Wireless Interference (12-speed systems):
- 12-speed Di2 communicates via Bluetooth and ANT+
- A high density of nearby wireless devices can cause interference
- Usually brief and doesn’t affect normal use
Issue 3: Shimano Di2 12-Speed Pairing Issues
Since 12-speed Di2 moved from a fully wired to a semi-wireless architecture, pairing has become a new common headache.
Re-pairing Steps:
- Open the E-Tube Ride App
- Select “Connection Management”
- Put the rear derailleur into pairing mode (hold the button until the LED flashes rapidly)
- Once the app detects the rear derailleur, pair the front derailleur and shifters in sequence
- Run a full shifting test once pairing is complete
Common Causes of Pairing Failure:
- Phone Bluetooth is off or the OS version is outdated
- Derailleur battery is too low (at least 20% is required)
- Interference from other nearby Di2 systems (common in bike shop environments)
General Troubleshooting Flow
Regardless of which system you use, follow this flow when something goes wrong:
Shifting Malfunction
├── No Response at All
│ ├── Check battery → Charge
│ ├── Check connections → Reinstall/reseat
│ └── System reset → Firmware update
├── Inaccurate Shifting
│ ├── App fine-tuning → One click at a time
│ ├── Check derailleur hanger → Align or replace
│ └── Check wear items → Chain/cassette
├── Delayed Shifting
│ ├── Battery issue → Charge
│ ├── Firmware issue → Update
│ └── Wireless interference → Test in a different location
└── Unusual Noise
├── Chain issue → Clean and lubricate
├── Alignment issue → Fine-tune
└── Mechanical wear → Check wear items
Preventive Maintenance Tips
Regular maintenance can significantly reduce the chance of a failure:
- Monthly: Check firmware updates and battery health via the app
- Every wash: Avoid spraying the derailleurs and connectors directly with a high-pressure hose
- Every 500 km: Check chain wear (electronic drivetrains are more sensitive to chain wear)
- Annually: Have a professional mechanic perform a full inspection
- Before races: Fully charge, update firmware, and run a complete shifting test
When Should You Take It to a Shop?
The following situations are best handled by a professional mechanic:
- Problems appearing after the derailleur has taken an impact
- Battery won’t charge or drains quickly after charging
- The app can’t detect the derailleur
- The derailleur makes an unusual motor noise
- Damaged cable housing or a loose connector (Di2 11-speed)
Repairing electronic shifting systems requires specialized tools and diagnostic software — attempting a DIY fix can cause further damage. Finding a bike shop with certified electronic shifting technicians is the best way to protect your investment.
