The good news is that most problems can be resolved with simple diagnostics and a bit of hands-on troubleshooting. This guide rounds up the most common failure symptoms for the two major electronic shifting systems and how to fix them.

Common SRAM AXS Issues

Issue 1: Pressing the Paddle but the Derailleur Doesn’t Respond

This is the most frequently reported issue among AXS users. Here are the likely causes and troubleshooting steps:

Step 1: Check the Battery Level

  • Press the function button on the derailleur and watch the LED
  • Green light: battery is healthy
  • Flashing red light: low battery, needs charging
  • No light: battery may be completely dead or making poor contact

Step 2: Reinstall the Battery

  • Press the battery release button and remove the battery
  • Check the contacts for dirt or oxidation
  • Wipe the contacts clean with a dry cloth
  • Reinstall the battery and confirm you hear a “click”

Step 3: Re-pair the Components
If the battery is fine but there’s still no response, the wireless pairing may have been lost:

  1. Press and hold the function buttons on both the front and rear derailleurs simultaneously for 5 seconds
  2. The LED will start flashing, indicating pairing mode

  3. Confirm the B-Tension Setting

    • Shift to the largest cog

Issue 3: Unusual Feel from the Shifter Paddle Buttons

Stuck or Unresponsive Buttons:

  • Likely caused by internal moisture condensation (common in winter)
  • Leave the shifter at room temperature for a while to dry out
  • Use low-pressure air to blow out the interior
  • Avoid using lubricants like WD-40, which can damage the internal electronics

No Tactile Feedback When Pressed:

  • The button spring may have worn out
  • Send it back to your dealer to have the shifter assembly replaced

Common Shimano Di2 Issues

Issue 1: No Shifting at All

Step 1: Check the Battery Level

  • 12-speed systems: hold the front derailleur button for 2 seconds and check the LED
    • Green: battery > 50%
    • Red: battery < 25%
    • No light: dead battery or a fault
  • 11-speed systems: press the button on the junction box and check the indicator light

Step 2: Check the Connections (11-speed wired systems)

  • Confirm all E-Tube connectors are firmly seated
  • Check the wiring for kinks or damage
  • Unplug the connectors, clean them with contact cleaner, and reconnect

Step 3: System Reset
12-speed system reset procedure:

  1. Make sure both derailleurs are in the smallest gear
  2. Press and hold both the front and rear derailleur buttons simultaneously for 10 seconds
  3. Release once the LED flashes rapidly
  4. The system will initialize automatically

11-speed system reset procedure:

  1. Disconnect the battery
  2. Wait 10 seconds

Issue 3: Shimano Di2 12-Speed Pairing Issues

Since 12-speed Di2 moved from a fully wired to a semi-wireless architecture, pairing has become a new common headache.

Re-pairing Steps:

  1. Open the E-Tube Ride App
  2. Select “Connection Management”
  3. Put the rear derailleur into pairing mode (hold the button until the LED flashes rapidly)
  4. Once the app detects the rear derailleur, pair the front derailleur and shifters in sequence

  • Phone Bluetooth is off or the OS version is outdated
