A Ride That Can Take 4 Hours or 19: Iceland's Golden Circle Cycling Loop, a 240-Kilometer Journey Decided by the Wind

Cycling in Iceland, you learn a new unit of perceived effort: “This wind can push me without pedaling.”

That’s not hyperbole. On the open highlands of southern Iceland, with a tailwind, you’ll find yourself gliding at 45 km/h, barely turning the pedals, a surge of almost-cheating euphoria rising in your chest. Then you turn a corner—just one corner—and the same wind hits you head-on. Your speed drops to 14 km/h instantly, and you’re putting out the power you’d use climbing Wuling on flat ground, while the scenery doesn’t seem to move at all.

This is the Golden Circle (Gullni hringurinn). It’s Iceland’s most famous tourist route, plied by tour buses from around the world; but riding it by bike turns it into something completely different—a ten-hour endurance lesson ruled by the wind, punctuated by three natural wonders on a geological scale.

One Loop, Three Geological-Scale Shocks

The core of the Golden Circle is three points: Þingvellir, Geysir, and Gullfoss. Each represents one facet of Iceland: history, geothermal activity, and water.

More importantly, the distances between them form a loop that can be done in a single day, but is by no means easy.

Þingvellir: The Only Place in the World Where You Can Ride Between Two Continental Plates

About 40 kilometers northeast of Reykjavík lies Þingvellir National Park. It has two identities, and both are extreme.

The first is geological. This is the rift valley where the North American and Eurasian plates are slowly pulling apart. Beside the road you ride, there’s a massive fissure called Almannagjá—a literal exposed boundary between tectonic plates. You can stop your bike, walk between two towering walls of black basalt, and realize: on your left is North America, on your right is Europe.

The Silfra fissure is also in this area—a crack in the earth filled with glacial meltwater so clear it has exceptional visibility, making it a world-famous diving site.

The second is cultural. Iceland’s parliament, Alþingi, convened here from 930 AD until it moved to Reykjavík in 1798. That means this open-air rift valley is one of the birthplaces of the world’s longest-running parliamentary tradition. In 2004, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The national park itself was established in 1930, making it Iceland’s oldest.

South of the park lies Þingvallavatn, Iceland’s largest natural lake. On the stretch riding along the lake, the wind is almost always a problem—there’s no shelter on the open water.

Geysir: The Source of the Word “Geyser” Itself

Two main features dominate the Haukadalur geothermal area.

Geysir itself barely erupts anymore. But it’s this spring’s name that became the word “geyser” in languages around the world. It’s one of the few Icelandic words exported globally.

The star now is Strokkur, right next door. It erupts roughly every 5 to 10 minutes, very reliably. You’ll see a ring of tourists, all phones raised, and then the water at the center of the vent swells into a blue dome—everyone draws a breath at that moment—and then a column of boiling water shoots into the sky.

For cyclists, there’s a very practical value here: this is one of the few guaranteed spots on the entire route with toilets, hot food, and indoor shelter from the wind. In Iceland, that matters more than any scenery.

Gullfoss: A Waterfall Saved by a Woman’s Determination

Gullfoss means “Golden Waterfall.” The Hvítá River (White River) drops here in two stages: the first about 11 meters, the second about 21 meters, before plunging into a canyon roughly 32 meters deep.

Its flow is on this scale: an average of about 141 cubic meters per second in summer, about 80 in winter; during floods it has reached 2,000 cubic meters per second. Standing on the viewing platform, you can’t hear the person next to you, your face is constantly misted, and on clear days a rainbow is almost permanently suspended above the canyon.

But it almost didn’t exist.

In the early 20th century, foreign investors wanted to build a hydroelectric plant here. A local woman named Sigríður Tómasdóttir—daughter of a co-owner of the waterfall—launched a long campaign of resistance. Legend has it she even threatened her own life, vowing to throw herself into the falls if it were sold. Today, a memorial stone carved with her profile stands above the waterfall. The falls were finally made a permanent protected area in 1979.

When you ride past, stop and look at that stone. On a route defined by tour buses, it’s one of the few reminders that “someone here once truly cared.”

Data discipline note: There is no single official Golden Circle route. Some ride only the shortest connection of the three points (just over 230 km), others add Kerið, Skálholt, and Hveragerði and exceed 260 km, while some sources calculate the full recommended loop at about 300 km. Climbing stats vary even more. When planning, rely on the GPS route you draw yourself—don’t trust any single number.

Segment Breakdown: Four Completely Different Worlds

Segment 1: Reykjavík → Þingvellir (Mosfellsheiði)

Leaving the city, you quickly enter a wilderness called Mosfellsheiði. The road begins a slow climb, flanked by moss-covered lava terrain—that unreal green volcanic tundra that sinks slightly underfoot.

There are no trees on this stretch. Iceland’s forest cover is extremely low, which means from the outskirts to the finish, you’ll encounter almost no natural windbreaks.

Pacing key: This is the first climb of the route, not steep but sustained. The mistake many make here is “pushing hard because the gradient is gentle,” leaving their best legs in the first hour. Deliberately keep the intensity low, and treat it as kilometer 30 of a 200 km ride—because that’s exactly what it is.

Segment 2: Þingvellir → Laugarvatn → Geysir

After leaving the national park, this is the most comfortable part of the route: rolling farmland, a few lakes, and the occasional snow-capped mountain in the distance. There are villages here, with relatively frequent resupply opportunities.

This is also where the wind direction first flips. The route changes its main heading here. If you’ve been riding into a headwind for the first half, congratulations—you might start enjoying yourself; if you’ve had a tailwind—prepare yourself mentally.

Segment 3: Geysir → Gullfoss → Turnaround

The distance from Geysir to Gullfoss is just over ten kilometers, the shortest stretch of the entire route, yet it carries the densest tourist traffic. Narrow roads, heavy traffic, and everyone’s eyes on the scenery. Be sure to ride with lights on and wear high-visibility clothing.

After turning back from Gullfoss, the route heads south along Route 35. This section is often the most enjoyable of the whole ride: the terrain generally descends, and if the wind cooperates, you’ll enjoy a long, high-speed glide.

Segment 4: Selfoss → Hveragerði → Hellisheiði → Reykjavík

This is the final, and the toughest, stretch.

After passing Selfoss, you join the Ring Road (Route 1), and then comes Hellisheiði: climbing from near Hveragerði (elevation approx. 40 m) to about 380 m, over roughly 8 km, with an average gradient of about 4.25%.

By the numbers alone, this is a moderate climb. But it comes after kilometer 200, and—it’s a major highway, with heavy traffic, wide open exposure, and almost guaranteed wind. This area is also a geothermal power zone; on the way up you’ll see steam rising from pipelines and the ground, with a faint smell of sulfur in the air.

Once over the top, it’s a long descent back into Reykjavík. If you still have legs left by then, that descent will be one of the most exhilarating twenty minutes of your life.

Power and Pacing Estimates: There Is Only One Variable

Iceland’s physics are simple: no high altitude, no extreme gradients, only wind.

Calculation parameters (all laid out):

  • Total mass m = 70 kg rider + 9 kg bike and gear = 79 kg (for longer rides you’ll actually be heavier; add accordingly)
  • g = 9.81 m/s²
  • Crr ≈ 0.005
  • CdA ≈ 0.32 m² (cruising position with hands on the hoods)
  • Drivetrain efficiency ≈ 0.975
  • Air density ρ: at an elevation of about 150 m and a temperature of about 8°C, the calculated ρ ≈ 1.233 kg/m³. Note this is nearly 7% higher than Taiwan’s summer coastal value of about 1.157—cold air is denser, so at the same speed you have to push more air.

Note that “pure riding time” is not the same as “how long you’ll actually be out there.” Adding in refueling stops, photos, bathroom breaks, flat repairs, and traffic lights, your actual door-to-door time will be roughly 1.2 to 1.3 times longer. Taking the 190 W still-air example, 8 hours 15 minutes of pure riding translates to roughly 10 hours or more in reality.

This table is the whole truth of riding in Iceland. The same rider, the same power, the same road, can finish in 4.5 hours—or still be riding after 19 hours. This isn’t a difference in fitness; it’s the air.

The loop’s advantage and trap: Because the Golden Circle is a loop, in theory you can’t have a headwind the entire way—some sections are bound to become tailwinds. But in practice, watch out for two things: first, the segments of the loop are not equal in length, so if the longest stretches happen to be into the wind, you’ll still suffer badly; second, Iceland’s wind can shift direction within a single day, so the tailwind you planned for in the morning may have reversed by the afternoon.

But multiply the times in this table by 1.3 to 1.5, because you’ll hit it after kilometer 200, and you’ll likely be carrying a headwind. This is the most likely spot on the entire route for a “mental breakdown.”

All of the above are physical-model estimates that do not account for actual wind shifts, gusts, road surface, luggage weight, stops, or individual variation; real-world results will differ.

High Latitude and Island Climate: Five Risks You Must Understand

1. Summer Nights That Barely Get Dark

Reykjavík sits at roughly 64°N latitude, still south of the Arctic Circle (about 66.5°N), so strictly speaking there’s no true midnight sun. But around June, the sun only dips briefly around midnight, leaving the sky in bright twilight all night long—in practice, you can ride all night without lights.

This is the Golden Circle’s biggest tactical advantage: you can avoid the daytime tour-bus crowds and choose to start late at night or in the early morning. At 3 or 4 a.m., the three main sights are nearly empty, and that kind of quiet is something money can’t buy during the day.

But the trap is here too: without darkness, you lose your sense of time. Set fixed reminders for refueling; don’t use “the sky is still light” as a gauge for how much longer you can push.

In winter, it’s the opposite: extremely short daylight, plus ice and strong winds—the winter Golden Circle is not something the average rider should touch.

2. Wind Is the Lead Actor, Not a Supporting Role

Iceland sits on the North Atlantic’s storm track, has almost no forests, and much of its terrain is wide open. This is one of the most cyclist-unfriendly wind environments on the planet.

Practical advice:

  • Before setting out, check hourly wind speed and direction forecasts, and decide clockwise or counterclockwise based on them. This single decision can be worth several hours.
  • Iceland’s meteorological office (Veðurstofa Íslands) and road administration (Vegagerðin) both publish public weather and road-condition information, and there’s also an official travel-safety information platform. Rely on these official sources.
  • When extreme wind speeds are forecast, canceling or shortening the ride is the correct answer, not cowardice.

3. The Weather Changes Three Times an Hour

There’s a widely quoted saying in Iceland, roughly: “Don’t like the weather? Wait five minutes.” Sunshine, rain, hail, and strong wind can all appear within the same hour, even in July.

That means your gear list cannot have a “probably won’t need it” category. A waterproof jacket, insulating layers, full-finger gloves, spare dry socks—these are the basics in Iceland, not optional extras.

4. Resupply Points Are So Sparse It Will Shock Taiwanese Riders

Taiwanese riders are used to a convenience store every five kilometers. Iceland is not like that. On the Golden Circle, resupply points are concentrated in a few specific settlements and attraction areas, with stretches of thirty or forty kilometers in between with absolutely no shops. Moreover, many shops’ opening hours vary significantly by season.

Rule of thumb: Always carry enough water and food to survive even if every shop is closed.

5. Road Conditions and Traffic Details

  • Gravel sections: The main Golden Circle route is mostly paved, but some connecting roads (e.g., roads to minor attractions) are gravel. Narrow tires on road bikes are at a serious disadvantage on Icelandic gravel roads. At least 28c is recommended, or just go with a gravel bike.
  • F-road highland tracks: These are interior roads requiring four-wheel drive. They are not part of the Golden Circle and are not suitable for regular road bikes. Don’t see a shortcut on the map and just turn onto one.
  • Single-lane bridges: Iceland has many single-lane bridges where yielding is required. Be sure to slow down and check that no oncoming traffic is approaching.
  • Tunnels: Some Icelandic tunnels prohibit bicycles and pedestrians (e.g., certain long subsea tunnels). Check every single one when planning your route—don’t assume you can ride through.
  • Sheep: Icelandic sheep are free-range in summer. They hang out by the roadside and may suddenly dash across the road, and ewes and lambs often stand on opposite sides of the road. If you see sheep by the road, assume they will cross.

If you have completed a 200 km+ ride in Taiwan (e.g., a segment of the Day Double Crossing, or a long-distance ride like Taipei–Kaohsiung), your endurance base is sufficient. The difference is: in Taiwan’s long rides you fear heat, sun, and cramps; in Iceland’s long rides you fear cold, wet, and being unable to move forward against headwinds on a deserted moor.

Closest training scenario in Taiwan: A long ride from Taipei toward the Northeast Coast and Yilan during the winter northeast monsoon. Low temperature, wet, strong crosswinds, open terrain—that is probably the closest version Taiwan can offer.

Practicalities of Riding There

  • Season: June to August is best—longest daylight, highest temperatures (still cool though), and best road conditions. May and September are feasible but riskier. Winter is not recommended.
  • Direction choice: Decide clockwise or counterclockwise on the morning of the ride based on the wind forecast. This is the single most important tactical decision on the Golden Circle.
  • Bike: A durable road bike or gravel bike with 28c or wider tires, fender mounts, and the ability to fit frame bags is recommended. A race-oriented setup with narrow high-pressure tires has no advantage here—only risk.
  • Bike rental: Reykjavík has bike rental services, but models, specifications, opening hours, and availability of long-distance equipment change every year. Confirm directly with the operator; don’t trust secondhand information.
  • Accommodation and transport: Accommodation in Iceland is in high demand during peak season, with prices and availability fluctuating. Use official booking channels. This article provides no pricing information.

Safety Reminders

  1. The wind forecast is the primary criterion for whether to ride or not. Not whether it rains—the wind. If strong winds are forecast, reschedule. Period.
  2. Hypothermia is the number one risk here. 8°C, rain, wind at 10 m/s, soaked clothes—this combination can strip away your judgment within an hour. Always keep a dry layer to change into.
  3. Add a layer every time you stop. Especially near waterfalls, where spray will quickly make you wet and cold.
  4. Traffic on main roads is fast. Route 1 is Iceland’s main artery, with high speeds and many large vehicles. Always run a daytime running light and taillight, and wear a high-visibility jacket.
  5. Do not race on open roads. This is a tourist route with many tour buses and rental cars, and drivers are often looking at the scenery instead of their mirrors.
  6. Leave your itinerary with someone. Signal can be unreliable on the moor. Bring a power bank, and let someone know where you’re going today and when you expect to be back.
  7. Don’t assume it’s safe just because it’s light out. The bright midnight twilight makes people underestimate fatigue and body heat loss.

The Six Most Common Mistakes

  1. Setting off without checking the wind direction. This is the only unforgivable mistake in Icelandic cycling. The same road can take four and a half hours or nineteen hours—the difference is the five minutes of homework before you leave.
  2. Using race-oriented equipment. 23c narrow tires, deep-section wheels, high tire pressure—in Iceland these three things translate respectively to punctures, being blown sideways by crosswinds, and losing grip on gravel. Bring your most durable bike, not your fastest one.
  3. Believing “it won’t be that cold in summer.” Icelandic summer daytime temperatures are often only around 10°C, and with rain and wind, the wind chill can drop to near freezing. This isn’t a warmth issue—it’s a hypothermia issue.
  4. Treating attractions as resupply points. Tourist attractions’ food facilities have opening hours and seasonal variations. Always carry enough water and food of your own, and treat shops as a pleasant surprise rather than part of the plan.
  5. Riding hard in the first hour. The first 50 km have relatively good roads and the wind might be favorable, so many people unconsciously push the pace. Then they pay for it at Hellisheiði at kilometer 200.
  6. Seeing an F-road on the map and deciding to take a shortcut. Those are highland roads—the surface, river crossings, and closure status are an entirely different world. They are not suitable for regular road bikes, and they are not something to decide on a whim.

Why Iceland Has Almost No Trees (And What That Means for Cycling)

Almost everyone cycling in Iceland for the first time is struck by the same thing: there are no trees in sight.

Iceland once had substantial birch forests, but after human settlement, a combination of logging, grazing, and volcanic eruptions kept forest cover at extremely low levels for centuries. Today, what you see is mostly moss, lichen, low grass, and bare lava.

This affects cycling more than any gradient figure:

  • No windbreaks. Taiwan’s coastal bike paths at least have casuarina trees. Iceland has nothing. The wind hits you however it blows.
  • No shade, no rain cover. When it rains, your only options are to keep riding or take shelter in a scenic viewpoint’s restroom.
  • No reference points—distance perception distorts. On a moor with no trees, no utility poles, and no buildings, distant mountains look close when they’re actually twenty kilometers away. Many people’s mental breakdowns start with “why aren’t we there yet.” The fix is simple: switch your computer to “distance ridden” instead of “distance remaining,” and focus only on the next ten kilometers.
  • But the view is also a gift. You can see glaciers, volcanoes, steam vents, lakes, and the shifting cloud systems across the entire sky all at once. This experience of “seeing the Earth at work in a single glance” is impossible in a place with trees.

Three Ways to Ride

A. One-Day Full Ride (Advanced and Above)
Depart in the early morning or late at night, covering roughly 240 km in a single day. Requires a cruising ability of 3.0 W/kg or higher and long-distance experience, and the wind conditions must cooperate. This is the most rewarding approach, but also the highest-risk one.

B. Two-Day Split (Recommended for Most People)
Day one: Reykjavík → Þingvellir → overnight near Geysir; day two: Gullfoss → Selfoss → over Hellisheiði and back to the city. About 120 km per day, which immediately brings the difficulty down to something most riders with long-distance experience can complete. Plus, you have time to actually take in those three sights instead of riding past, snapping a photo, and moving on.

C. Three-Day Leisurely Ride (With Side Trips)
Add Kerið, Skálholt, Brúarfoss, and Hveragerði to the itinerary, riding about 80 to 100 km per day. This is the way to truly experience Iceland—because what makes Iceland most captivating isn’t those three famous sights, but the unnamed wilderness stretches between them.
