A note on data discipline: The “4.7% average” for the GMR route is a figure diluted by several downhill sections in the middle — it doesn’t mean it’s easier to ride. - Deliberately hold back in the first 5 km, keeping power within 100% of your target pace.
- Resupply fully at Mount Baldy Village: fill water, eat solid food, reset your mental rhythm.
- Use the corner-in, corner-out rhythm for the 8 hairpins: grind through the inside, spin smoothly out, no standing sprints.
- Get your heart rate down on the Manker Flats slope, preparing to take on the final 400 meters at 13%.
- Rest five to ten minutes at the gondola station, put on a jacket, then start descending. Stay conservative for the first 3 kilometers.
What you just rode is the road pro riders used to decide the overall winner of the Tour of California.
