Waterproof-Breathable Membrane Showdown: A Complete Review of Gore-Tex, eVent, and Pertex Shield

For cyclists, a rain jacket needs to do more than just keep rain out — it also has to vent the large amount of water vapor your body produces during high-intensity exercise. A jacket that can’t breathe will leave you drenched in sweat within ten minutes, turning “wet from the outside” into “wet from the inside.” This article takes a deep look at three mainstream waterproof-breathable membrane technologies, helping riders understand how they work and how they actually perform in practice.

The Basic Principle of Waterproof Breathability

Every waterproof-breathable membrane relies on the huge size difference between water in its liquid and gaseous states. A liquid water droplet is roughly 100 microns in diameter, while a water vapor molecule is only about 0.0004 microns across. The micropores in the membrane are large enough to let water vapor through, yet small enough to block liquid water — this is the physical basis of being “waterproof yet breathable.”

Two key metrics measure waterproof-breathable performance:

  • Waterproofness: expressed as a hydrostatic head (mm H₂O); at least 10,000mm is generally required to handle sustained rain
  • Breathability: expressed as MVTR (Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate, g/m²/24h); at least 15,000 g/m²/24h is recommended for cycling

Gore-Tex: The Industry Benchmark

How It Works

Gore-Tex uses an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) membrane containing roughly 1.4 billion micropores per square centimeter. These pores are about 20,000 times smaller than a water droplet, yet 700 times larger than a water vapor molecule. On the inner side of the ePTFE membrane, Gore also adds a polyurethane (PU) protective layer to keep skin oils and dirt from clogging the pores.

Cycling-Specific Product Lines

  • Gore-Tex Active: Best suited to cycling. Uses a thinner ePTFE membrane, boosting breathability by roughly 25% over standard Gore-Tex. Gore Wear’s C5/C7 series jackets largely use this technology.
  • Gore-Tex SHAKEDRY: A revolutionary face-fabric-free design with the ePTFE membrane exposed directly to the outside. Extremely light (around 100g), highly breathable, and it won’t absorb water and become heavy. The downside is lower durability, and it isn’t well suited to use with a backpack.
  • Gore-Tex INFINIUM: Focused on wind resistance rather than full waterproofing, with the best breathability of the family. Well suited as an autumn/winter windbreaker.

Real-World Performance

During sustained moderate-intensity riding (around 200W), Gore-Tex Active breathes well, though on high-output efforts like climbing you can still notice a slight clammy feeling inside. SHAKEDRY clearly outperforms Active in breathability, but it costs 50-80% more and has a shorter service life.

Gore-Tex’s waterproof reliability is the best in the industry. Across hundreds of hours of ride testing, seam tape and zipper sealing hold up extremely well.

eVent: The King of Breathability

How It Works

eVent also uses an ePTFE membrane, but its key innovation is “Direct Venting” technology. Unlike Gore-Tex, eVent replaces the continuous PU protective layer with an oleophobic coating, allowing water vapor to pass through the micropores more directly. This means eVent doesn’t need to rely on a temperature and humidity gradient to drive moisture transfer — even in a warm, humid outside environment, its breathability stays excellent.

Cycling Applications

eVent has a smaller presence in cycling-specific apparel than Gore-Tex, but some brands do use it:

  • eVent DVstorm: High waterproof rating (20,000mm+), suited to extreme weather
  • eVent DValpine: Balances waterproofness and breathability, suited to general riding

Real-World Performance

eVent’s breathability advantage is most obvious during high-intensity riding. Because it doesn’t rely on a humidity gradient, in Taiwan’s hot, humid summer conditions eVent’s real-world breathability outperforms comparable Gore-Tex products. However, eVent’s oleophobic coating can degrade over time, reducing breathability with prolonged use. Regularly applying a DWR restorer can slow this decline.

Pertex Shield: The Lightweight Specialist

How It Works

Pertex Shield takes a different approach from the other two — it uses a polyurethane (PU) membrane rather than ePTFE. The PU membrane’s breathing mechanism is “non-porous diffusion”: water vapor molecules are absorbed into the membrane, diffuse through it at the molecular level, and are released on the outer side. This mechanism depends on a temperature and humidity gradient to drive it.

Product Lines

  • Pertex Shield: The standard version, with 20,000mm waterproofing and 20,000 g/m²/24h breathability
  • Pertex Shield Air: An enhanced-breathability version that trades some waterproofness for better airflow
  • Pertex Quantum: An ultralight fabric (as low as 28g/m²) with a DWR treatment for water-repellent finish

Real-World Performance

Pertex’s biggest advantage is weight. A cycling jacket using Pertex Shield Air can weigh as little as 70-90g and packs down smaller than a can of energy drink. For riders who want to carry an emergency rain jacket at all times, that’s a huge selling point.

However, the PU membrane’s breathing mechanism depends on a temperature gradient, and its efficiency drops sharply when the outside temperature approaches body temperature. In Taiwan’s 35°C summer conditions, Pertex Shield’s real-world breathability falls noticeably short of its spec numbers. In addition, PU membranes can hydrolyze and degrade over long-term use, typically giving them a shorter lifespan than ePTFE membranes.

Buying Advice for Cyclists

Long-Distance Road Riding

Gore-Tex SHAKEDRY or eVent is recommended. Long rides call for the best breathability and reliable waterproof performance. SHAKEDRY’s non-absorbent property is especially advantageous in sustained rain.

Commuting

Gore-Tex Active is recommended. Durability is the top priority for a commuter jacket, and Gore-Tex’s quality assurance and repair policy add peace of mind.

Lightweight Riding / Bikepacking

Pertex Shield Air or Pertex Quantum is recommended. Extreme light weight and packability are essential for self-supported long-distance riding.

Considerations for Taiwan

Taiwan’s hot, humid climate is a tough test for waterproof-breathable jackets. Highly breathable options like eVent or Gore-Tex SHAKEDRY are recommended. Regularly maintaining the DWR coating (using dedicated products like Nikwax) is also key to preserving jacket performance.

Care and Maintenance

Whichever membrane technology you choose, proper care can significantly extend its service life:

  1. Wash regularly: Use a dedicated cleaner (such as Nikwax Tech Wash) and avoid residue from regular laundry detergent
  2. Restore DWR: Tumble dry on low heat for 20 minutes after washing, or apply gentle heat with an iron, to reactivate the DWR coating
  3. Reapply DWR: When water no longer beads up and rolls off the surface, use a spray-on or wash-in DWR restorer
  4. Storage: Hang loosely; avoid long-term compressed storage

There’s no single “best” waterproof-breathable jacket — only the one best suited to your riding style and conditions. Understanding the strengths and limitations of each technology is the key to making the smartest investment.
