Taiwan’s Classic High-Mountain Cycling Challenges: An In-Depth Guide to Wuling, Hehuanshan, and Qingjing Farm

Central Taiwan’s high mountains are home to some of the highest paved cycling routes in Asia. Wuling, Hehuanshan, and Qingjing Farm are more than just place names — they are pilgrimage sites for climbing cyclists. Understanding what makes each route unique will help you prepare for and execute your challenge more effectively.

Wuling Pass (武嶺) - 2,860m

Route Overview
Wuling is Taiwan’s highest paved cycling climb. There are two main routes from Wushe to Wuling:

Route 1: Via Qingjing Farm (Northern Route, Recommended)

  • Distance: approx. 27km
  • Elevation gain: 1,350m
  • Average gradient: 5%
  • Steepest section: 8-9% (after Qingjing Farm)
  • Riding time: 2.5-3.5 hours

Route 2: Via Puli/Ruiyan (Southern Route)

  • Distance: approx. 30km
  • Elevation gain: 1,450m
  • Average gradient: 4.8%
  • Riding time: 3-4 hours

Gradient Analysis
First 6km (Wushe to the turn onto Provincial Highway 14): a moderate 5-6% grade, a good warm-up section
Middle 8km (Puli area): 6-7%, intensity increases and the legs start to fatigue
Qingjing Farm section: 7-8%, the most mentally challenging stretch
Final 3km: a brutal 8-10%, testing both endurance and willpower

Resupply and Services

  • Wushe: starting point, convenience store resupply
  • Puli townships: numerous restaurants
  • Qingjing Farm (around the 18km mark): a key resupply point with many guesthouses and restaurants
  • Hehuanshan Lodge: the last resupply stop
  • Wuling summit: parking area with food facilities

Best Time to Ride

  • Season: mid-September to November is ideal (stable weather, long daylight hours)
  • Time of day: start at 6-7am to avoid the strong afternoon sun
  • Avoid: mid-January to early March (frequently shrouded in cloud with poor visibility) and July-August (afternoon thunderstorms are common)

Hehuanshan East Peak (合歡山東峰) - 3,105m

Route Overview
Hehuanshan can be approached via several routes, with the East Peak being the most commonly attempted challenge for climbing cyclists:

  • Distance: approx. 42km from Puli to the East Peak
  • Elevation gain: approx. 1,800m
  • Average gradient: 4.3%
  • Steepest section: 8-9%
  • Riding time: 4-5 hours

Key Gradient Sections

  • Puli to Qingjing Farm (18km): a steady 6-7% climb
  • Qingjing Farm to Hehuanshan Lodge (8km): 7-8%, where the real test begins
  • Hehuanshan Lodge to the East Peak parking area (5km): a brutal 8-9%
  • Final 2km: sustained 8-10%, an extreme challenge

Resupply Points

  • Puli township: starting resupply
  • Qingjing Farm: main resupply point (18km from the start)
  • Hehuanshan Lodge: last resupply point (31km from the start)
  • East Peak parking area: the finish, no food services

Unique Challenges

  • High-altitude oxygen deficit: the East Peak sits above 3,000m, where oxygen levels are roughly 75% of sea level, so expect your speed to drop by 20-30%
  • Sharp temperature drops: temperature falls about 0.6°C for every 100m of elevation gain, meaning the summit can be 15-20°C colder than the base
  • Rapidly changing weather: fog and rain are common in the afternoon, reducing visibility

Best Time to Ride

  • Season: September to November is most ideal
  • Time of day: you must start early (5-6am) to avoid worsening afternoon weather
  • Avoid: December to March (rain and fog are common, and snow is possible)

Qingjing Farm (清境農場) - 1,748m

Route Overview
Qingjing Farm is a destination in its own right, but it also serves as the midpoint on the way to Wuling.

Qingjing Farm Route Specifics

  • Start: Wushe
  • Distance: 15km
  • Elevation gain: 550m
  • Average gradient: 3.7%
  • Steepest section: 6-8%
  • Riding time: 1.5-2 hours

Gradient Progression

  • Wushe township: 3-4%, a gentle start
  • Middle 6km: 4-5%, a steady climb
  • Entrance to the Qingjing scenic area (12km): 6-7%, the gradient picks up
  • Final 3km: 7-8%, approaching the main Qingjing Farm area

Highlights and Advantages

  • Beautiful scenery: tea plantations and mountain views along the way provide strong mental motivation
  • Moderate length: achievable in under 2 hours, suitable for intermediate riders
  • Convenient resupply: many guesthouses and restaurants along the mid-section of the route
  • Multiple endpoints: you can stop and enjoy the scenic farm area, or continue on to Wuling

Resupply Points

  • Wushe: starting point
  • Qingjing Farm’s small commercial street: numerous shops and restaurants
  • Green Green Grassland (青青草原): facilities around the endpoint

Best Time to Ride

  • Season: rideable year-round, though autumn and winter (September-February) offer the most stable weather
  • Time of day: ride in the morning to avoid the afternoon heat
  • Special timing: seasonal farm events can bring extra tourist traffic, which you may want to plan around

  • Suitable for intermediate riders; finish in the morning and have the afternoon free to explore

Wuling One-Day Challenge (Full-Day Challenge)

Practical Tips

  1. Scout in advance: if possible, drive the route beforehand to identify resupply points and steep sections
  2. Carry spares: repair services are scarce at high altitude, so bring spare inner tubes, tools, and a spare chain
  3. Dress in layers: temperatures at the summit can drop sharply, so bring a windbreaker and extra layers
  4. Manage your hydration: dehydration happens faster at high altitude, so carry extra water
  5. Monitor the weather: check the forecast before you set out and have a plan to turn back if conditions worsen

Each of these three routes has its own character, from the gentle experience of Qingjing Farm to the extreme challenge of Hehuanshan’s East Peak. No matter your level, Taiwan’s high mountains are waiting for you to conquer them.
