
Cyclists’ Muscle Groups: Which Muscles Work Hardest and How to Strengthen Them
Cycling looks like a leg-only sport, but it is actually a full-body coordinated movement. Understanding which muscles play the key roles while riding lets you train them specifically to boost overall performance and prevent common muscle imbalances.

A complete pedal stroke (360 degrees) can be broken into several key phases:

3. Hamstrings
The muscles on the back of the thigh contribute during the backstroke phase and also help prevent excessive forward lean.

- Romanian Deadlift: Eccentric strengthening for the hamstrings
- Leg Curl: Direct isolation training
- Nordic Curl: An advanced exercise that is notably effective at preventing muscle strains
4. Calf Muscles
The gastrocnemius and soleus stabilize the ankle during the backstroke and upstroke phases of the pedal cycle.

- Standing Calf Raise: 3 sets of 20–25 reps per week
- Single-Leg Seated Calf Raise: Eccentric strengthening that helps improve pedaling efficiency
5. Core Muscles
The core is not a primary power source for cycling, but it is the foundation that stabilizes power output. When the core is unstable, power generated while riding “leaks” out as unnecessary body sway.

- Maintaining a neutral spine position (preventing excessive lower-back flexion)
- Stabilizing the pelvis so both legs generate force in the correct direction
