Overtraining Syndrome: A Health Warning Every Serious Cyclist Must Read

There is a paradox in cycling training: the harder you train, the more progress you don’t necessarily make. Overtraining is a cumulative state of physiological and psychological imbalance. When training stress exceeds the body’s recovery capacity, performance doesn’t improve—it declines instead.

  • Declining sleep quality (restless sleep, early waking)
  • Consistently elevated resting heart rate (more than 5 bpm above personal baseline)
  • Frequent illness (lowered immunity)
  • Changes in appetite (loss of appetite or binge eating)

Hormonal Changes:

  • Decreased testosterone/cortisol ratio
  • Female cyclists may experience menstrual irregularities

Psychological Symptoms

These are often overlooked but equally important:

  • Loss of training motivation, aversion to riding
  • Irritability, emotional instability
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Loss of interest in previously enjoyable activities
  • Depressive mood

Social Pressure

The “KOM hunting” culture on social media platforms like Strava pushes many cyclists to ride even without adequate recovery, just to maintain their mileage or protect their segment rankings.

Climate Impact

Taiwan’s hot, humid summers place far greater physiological stress on the body during every ride than in temperate regions, yet many riders do not correspondingly reduce their training volume.

Compounding Work Stress

The stress of physical training adds to work and life stress. When life stress is high, the same training load has a more severe impact on the body.

How to Monitor Recovery Status?

Morning Resting Heart Rate Method

Measure your heart rate every morning upon waking (before getting out of bed):

  • Baseline: Average value over 1 consecutive week
  • Warning: More than 7 bpm above baseline—recommend reducing volume or resting
  • Tools: Heart rate strap or certain smartwatches that can record automatically

HRV (Heart Rate Variability) Monitoring

HRV is currently the most scientific recovery indicator:

  • High HRV: Autonomic nervous system is balanced, recovery is good
  • Low HRV: High physical stress, rest is needed
  • Tools: HRV4Training (App) + chest strap heart rate monitor, or built-in features on Garmin/Apple Watch

Subjective Fatigue Scale (RPE/TQR)

Record daily:

  1. Subjective feeling before training (1–10 scale)

Follow Periodization Training Principles

A proper training cycle should include:

  • Training Week: Normal or high volume
  • Accumulation Week: Further increase in volume
  • Recovery Week: Schedule a reduced-volume week every 3–4 weeks (30–40% less than normal volume)
  • Transition Period: After each macrocycle (12–16 weeks), schedule 2–4 weeks of low-intensity transition

The 80/20 Training Rule

Research shows that most elite endurance athletes’ training distribution is:

  • 80% of training at low intensity (Zone 1–2)
  • 20% of training at moderate to high intensity (Zone 3–5)

Many amateur cyclists do the opposite, spending a large amount of training in the “moderate-intensity gray zone,” which is the most common pattern for accumulating overtraining.

Recovery Methods

If Mild Overtraining Symptoms Have Appeared

  1. Reduce volume immediately: For the next 1–2 weeks, drop to 50–60% of normal training volume
  2. Optimize sleep: Ensure 7–9 hours of sleep per day
  3. Nutritional support: Ensure adequate calorie and carbohydrate intake—do not attempt to lose weight during this time
  4. Stress management: Reduce sources of life and work stress

Recovery from Severe Overtraining

If you have reached the level of Overtraining Syndrome:

  • Consult a sports medicine specialist
  • Completely stop high-intensity training; only maintain easy rides or walking
  • Psychological counseling (if depressive mood is present)
  • Recovery may take several months
