In climbing races, the single most critical indicator of a rider’s speed is the Power-to-Weight Ratio (W/kg). This deceptively simple number carries deep physiological and physical principles behind it.

The Physics Behind W/kg

When climbing, overcoming gravity is the dominant source of energy expenditure. According to the physics equation:

Climbing Power = Body Weight (kg) x Gravitational Acceleration (9.81 m/s²) x Vertical Ascent Speed (m/s) x Efficiency Coefficient

This means: two riders climbing at the same W/kg output will, in theory, climb at the same speed, regardless of how different their body weights are.

Why Being Lightweight Matters So Much

Suppose Rider A weighs 80kg with an FTP of 320W, giving W/kg = 4.0
Suppose Rider B weighs 60kg with an FTP of 240W, giving W/kg = 4.0

Two Paths to Improving W/kg

Path 1: Increase the Numerator (Raise Power)

FTP Training Methods:

The core of power development is raising your FTP (Functional Threshold Power).

The Most Effective FTP-Building Workouts:

  1. Threshold Intervals

    • Format: 4-5 x 10-20 minutes @ 95-105% FTP
    • Recovery: Rest interval equal to 50% of the work interval
    • Frequency: 1-2 times per week
  2. Sweet Spot Training

    • Format: 2-3 x 20-30 minutes @ 88-93% FTP
    • Benefit: The best FTP-gain-per-hour-invested ratio
    • Frequency: 2 times per week
  3. VO2max Intervals

    • Format: 5-8 x 3-5 minutes @ 110-120% FTP

Ramp Test

A method widely used by Zwift and TrainerRoad today:

  1. Increase power by a fixed wattage step each minute
  2. Continue riding until exhaustion
  3. The highest power completed in the final full minute x 0.75 = estimated FTP

The Effect of High Altitude on W/kg

At high-altitude events like Taiwan KOM, altitude affects power output:

Blindly chasing a lower body weight, or piling on training volume while ignoring quality, rarely achieves the best result.
