Summer Heat-Avoidance Cycling Strategies in Taiwan: Early Morning Starts and Choosing High-Elevation Routes

Summer in Taiwan (May through October) is the most challenging season for cycling. Lowland temperatures routinely exceed 35°C, and combined with high humidity, riding can feel miserable and even pose health risks. With smart planning, however, you can still maintain solid training volume through the summer.

Early Morning Departure Strategy

Best Times to Start

Here’s how temperatures typically shift over a summer day in Taiwan:

Time Slot Typical Temperature Riding Comfort
5:00-6:00 AM 26-28°C Excellent
6:00-8:00 AM 27-30°C Good
8:00-10:00 AM 30-33°C Tolerable
10:00 AM-2:00 PM 33-37°C Not recommended
3:00-5:00 PM 33-36°C Acceptable
5:00-7:00 PM 30-33°C Good

Best strategy: Complete your main mileage between 5 AM and 9 AM, finishing the long stretch of your ride before temperatures spike.

Getting Ready for an Early Ride

  • Prep your gear the night before: pack your bag, prepare nutrition, and charge your phone
  • Light breakfast: easily digestible foods like bananas or oat bars — avoid heading out on an empty or overly full stomach
  • Tell family your route: heading out before dawn calls for extra attention to safety check-ins

The Cooling Benefits of High-Elevation Routes

The Lapse Rate

A basic principle of atmospheric science: temperature drops by roughly 0.6°C for every 100 meters of elevation gain. That means:

Elevation Temperature Difference vs. Lowlands
500m -3°C
1000m -6°C
2000m -12°C
3000m -18°C

On a 35°C day in the lowlands, heading up to 1000m of elevation gets you a comfortable ride at roughly 29°C.

Northern Taiwan

  • Yangmingshan Yangde Boulevard: 700m elevation, about 2 hours from downtown Taipei
  • Beiyi Highway (Provincial Highway 9C): The Pinglin-to-Shiding section at its highest point, around 500m

Central Taiwan

  • Dasyueshan Forest Road: Starting from Taichung, climbs up to 2600m at its peak
  • Basianshan Forest Road: Toward Guguan in Taichung, quiet and forested

Southern Taiwan

  • Alishan Highway: The high-mountain stretch above Fenqihu
  • Tengzhi Forest Road: Toward Kaohsiung, a lesser-known escape from the heat

Things to Watch for When Riding at Elevation

Temperature Shock on the Descent

After riding at high elevation in summer, the descent can bring a sudden drop of 10°C or more in perceived temperature. Recommendations:

  • Pack a light long-sleeve jacket or rain shell in your bag
  • Put on long sleeves before descending to avoid getting chilled while sweat-soaked

Afternoon Thunderstorms in the Mountains

Taiwan’s mountain regions see strong convective activity in summer afternoons, with thunderstorms typically occurring between 1 PM and 4 PM. Plan your ride so you reach the summit or begin your descent before 1 PM.

Planning Summer Fuel Stops

Summer requires more frequent refueling stops than other seasons. Here are common resupply spots:

  1. Convenience stores (7-Eleven, FamilyMart): Taiwan has an extremely high density of convenience stores — nearly one every 5km in the lowlands
  2. Gas stations: Key resupply points on mountain roads, usually with drinking water facilities
  3. Farmhouses and temples: Friendly locals often have cold drinks to share
  4. Cyclist rest stops: Some popular routes have dedicated cyclist service stations

Summer Riding Gear Checklist

Category Recommendation
Jersey Lightweight, sweat-wicking, half-zip preferred
Shorts Short-sleeve-style bib shorts that don’t restrict heat dissipation
Head Lightweight helmet with plenty of ventilation
Sun protection UV arm sleeves + full-face sunscreen
Gloves Half-finger gloves, breathable and sweat-wicking
Shoes Ventilated cycling shoes, or traditional shoes with vent openings

Indoor Training as a Backup Plan

During the hottest afternoon hours of summer, a smart trainer paired with a platform like Zwift is an excellent alternative:

  • Avoids extreme heat and UV exposure
  • Maintains training quality without road-condition interruptions
  • Pair with a fan to create near-outdoor cooling conditions

Summer cycling in Taiwan is absolutely doable — it just takes more careful planning. Start early, head for elevation, and stay well-fueled: these are the three keys to getting through Taiwan’s scorching summer riding season.
