Taiwan Night Race Safety Guide: Lights, Reflective Gear, and Traffic Control Rules

Taiwan’s night cycling races and night rides are becoming increasingly popular, ranging from small community night rides to large-scale night time-trial races. Roads at night offer a different riding experience. However, the safety challenges of riding at night are far greater than during the day, so understanding the relevant regulations and preparation is essential.

Taiwan Regulations: Mandatory Bicycle Lighting Requirements

According to the Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act, bicycles ridden at night (from sunset to sunrise) or in conditions of poor visibility must have:

Lighting Requirement Regulation Details
Front light White or yellow, must be able to illuminate a distance of 10 meters ahead
Rear reflector Red reflector, must be able to reflect light when illuminated by a vehicle’s headlights from 50 meters away

Violating this regulation can result in a fine of up to NT$300. But more importantly: insufficient lighting is the leading cause of nighttime accidents.

Practical Choices for Lighting Equipment

Front Lights

Lumens Suitable Use Representative Model
100–300 lumens Slow urban night riding Bontrager Flare
300–600 lumens Suburban road night riding Cygolite Metro
600–1,200 lumens Rural/mountain road night riding Lezyne Super 1000XL
Over 1,200 lumens Off-road/MTB night riding Exposure Strada

Flashing vs. Steady Light:

  • Flashing mode: Saves battery, attracts attention, suitable for urban areas and areas with street lighting
  • Steady mode: Illuminates the road surface, suitable for poorly lit rural and mountain roads
  • Recommended combination: Steady light on the primary light, flashing on the secondary light

Rear Lights

The function of a rear light is to let vehicles behind you see you, not to illuminate the road. Key selection points:

  • Brightness: A high-brightness mode visible in daylight (such as the Cateye Rapid X2, 150 lumens)
  • Angle coverage: A wide-angle rear light (180° or 360°) is safer than a narrow-angle one
  • Daytime running light mode: Also recommended for use during the day to improve visibility

The Importance of Reflective Gear

Active lighting (battery-powered) fails when the battery runs out, while passive reflective materials require no power source and reflect light immediately when illuminated by a vehicle’s headlights.

Applications of Reflective Materials

Location Reflective Method Effect
Ankles Reflective ankle bands The position pedestrians notice first (due to the pedaling motion)
Back of jersey Sewn-in reflective strips Main identification area for vehicles behind
Helmet Reflective stickers High position, high visibility
Wheels Spoke reflectors Dynamic reflective effect while riding
Frame Reflective tape Side visibility

Reflective Vests

For high-risk sections (unlit roads, high-speed sections), it is recommended to wear a reflective safety vest over your jersey. An EN ISO 20471-certified high-visibility vest can be seen from up to 300 meters away when illuminated by vehicle headlights.

Special Safety Regulations for Night Races

Organizers Typically Require

  1. Minimum lumen requirements: Many races require front lights of at least 300 lumens
  2. Mandatory rear light: A visible rear light is required (usually a continuously flashing red light)
  3. Reflective vest or reflective strips: Especially for large-scale night ride events
  4. Helmet inspection: Helmets for night rides are also subject to inspection

Types of Traffic Control

Control Type Description
Full closure (rolling closure) Safest, police escort in front and behind, but speed is limited
Partial closure (one-way control) Opposing traffic lanes on part of the route are closed
Open (signal-controlled) Traffic police at intersections, normal traffic flow on the rest of the route

Important: On partially closed and open sections, riders must still obey traffic signals and may not run red lights or deviate from the designated route.

Visual Adaptation for Night Riding

The field of vision you’re used to during the day narrows significantly at night. The following suggestions can help you adapt:

  1. Choice of eyewear: Use clear or light yellow-tinted lenses at night (do not wear sunglasses)
  2. Reduced speed: Reaction time at night needs to be longer than during the day, so maintain a conservative pace
  3. Anticipation: Slow down in advance at gaps between streetlights (unlit areas)
  4. Identifying puddles on the road: It is difficult to gauge the depth of standing water at night, so proceed with caution before crossing puddles

Night riding has its own unique beauty — quiet roads, the flickering lights of the city, cooler air. But safety always comes first. Adequate lighting preparation is not just a regulatory requirement, but also a responsibility to yourself and other road users.
