The Wuling descent is one of the most severe braking tests in Taiwan. 55 km of continuous descending, 2,200 m elevation drop — any braking system will be pushed to its limits. Choosing the right brake pads determines whether you can safely ride back down to Puli.

1. Resin (Resin / Organic)
- Main components: resin fibers, metal powder (small amount)
- Characteristics: soft bite, low noise, fast wear
- Weight: lighter
2. Metallic (Metallic / Sintered)
- Main components: sintered metal powder

3. Semi-metallic (Semi-metallic)
- Between resin and metallic

Mandatory Brake Checks Before Wuling
T-7 Days
- Visually inspect brake pad thickness: replace if under 1 mm remaining
- Check rotor trueness: spin the wheel, observe if it rubs the caliper
- Test braking force: full squeeze should not bottom out against the handlebar
T-3 Days
- Bleed check: if using DOT fluid and it hasn’t been changed in 1 year, replace it
- Shimano mineral oil: also recommended to replace if not changed in 1.5 years
- Clean rotors: use alcohol and dedicated brake cleaner
T-1 Day
- Test brake 3 times (stationary): confirm lever feel, no fluid leaks

Descent Braking Technique (Paired with Good Pads)
Pulse Braking
- Do not hold the brakes continuously
- Short squeeze for 2–3 seconds → release for 2–3 seconds → squeeze again
- Gives the rotor time to cool
Front-Rear Balance
- Front brake 70% / rear brake 30%
- Using only the rear brake: rear wheel easily locks up
- Using only the front brake: risk of flipping over the bars
Brake Before Corners
- Complete braking on the straight
- Do not brake while cornering, only steer
- Accelerate after exiting the corner
Signs of Brake Overheating
If any of the following occur during the descent:
- Noticeably reduced braking power
- Smoke coming from the rotor
- Pungent burning smell
- Unusual squealing

- Fully release the brakes, let them air-cool for 3–5 minutes
