Wuling Descent Brake Pad Selection: Metallic vs Resin vs Carbon Comparison

The Wuling descent is one of the most severe braking tests in Taiwan. 55 km of continuous descending, 2,200 m elevation drop — any braking system will be pushed to its limits. Choosing the right brake pads determines whether you can safely ride back down to Puli.

Brake Pad Material Categories

1. Resin (Resin / Organic)

  • Main components: resin fibers, metal powder (small amount)
  • Characteristics: soft bite, low noise, fast wear
  • Weight: lighter

2. Metallic (Metallic / Sintered)

  • Main components: sintered metal powder
  • Characteristics: strong bite, high heat resistance, slow wear, prone to squealing
  • Weight: heavier

3. Semi-metallic (Semi-metallic)

  • Between resin and metallic
  • The most common choice among riders

4. Carbon (Carbon-ceramic)

  • High-end option
  • Extremely high heat resistance, lightweight
  • Very expensive (NT$3,000+/pair)

Braking Demands of the Wuling Descent

  • Prolonged continuous braking: extremely high heat accumulation
  • High-temperature tolerance: rotor temperatures can reach 400°C+
  • Stability: must not soften (fade) at high temperatures
  • Grip: must still brake effectively in the rain

Conclusion: For the Wuling descent, metallic or semi-metallic pads outperform pure resin.

  • L04C (for R9270 / R8170): high heat resistance, Wuling essential
  • H03C (for Ultegra R8070 / R8170): balanced choice
  • Suitable for: long descents, wet surfaces

SRAM

  • Organic (blue card): good cold bite, prone to fade when hot
  • Metallic (silver card): recommended for Wuling, stable when hot
  • Power / Centerline rotors: recommended

Other Brands

  • Galfer: Spanish brand, commonly used on high-end downhill bikes
  • Swissstop: Swiss-made, high wear resistance
  • Kool Stop: legendary from the rim brake era, still offers disc options

Rim Brake Pads

If you ride an older road bike (rim brakes):

Carbon Wheel Specific

  • Swissstop Black Prince / Blue: for carbon rims
  • Never use aluminum rim-specific pads on carbon rims (will destroy the rim)

Aluminum Rim Specific

  • Kool Stop Dura Type 2: industry benchmark
  • Swissstop Yellow: commonly seen on Wuling

Disc Rotor Matching

Brake pads are consumables, and so are rotors. After Wuling:

Rotor Inspection

  • Thickness: new rotor 1.8–2.0 mm, replace at 1.5 mm
  • Surface flatness: no depressions, no warping
  • No deep scoring

Rotor Recommendations

  • Shimano RT900 / RT800: OEM, Ice-Tech heat dissipation layer

Brake Fluid Selection

Shimano Mineral Oil

  • Boiling point: 280°C
  • Advantages: non-hygroscopic, low corrosion
  • Fine for Wuling

DOT Fluid (for SRAM, TRP)

  • DOT 4: boiling point 230°C (dry) / 155°C (wet)
  • DOT 5.1: boiling point 260°C / 180°C
  • DOT 5.1 recommended for Wuling
  • DOT absorbs water: replace every 1–2 years

Mandatory Brake Checks Before Wuling

T-7 Days

  1. Visually inspect brake pad thickness: replace if under 1 mm remaining
  2. Check rotor trueness: spin the wheel, observe if it rubs the caliper
  3. Test braking force: full squeeze should not bottom out against the handlebar

T-3 Days

  1. Bleed check: if using DOT fluid and it hasn’t been changed in 1 year, replace it
  2. Shimano mineral oil: also recommended to replace if not changed in 1.5 years
  3. Clean rotors: use alcohol and dedicated brake cleaner

T-1 Day

  1. Test brake 3 times (stationary): confirm lever feel, no fluid leaks
  2. Low-speed brake test before departure: quick stop from 5 km/h, no abnormal noise

Descent Braking Technique (Paired with Good Pads)

Pulse Braking

  • Do not hold the brakes continuously
  • Short squeeze for 2–3 seconds → release for 2–3 seconds → squeeze again
  • Gives the rotor time to cool

Front-Rear Balance

  • Front brake 70% / rear brake 30%
  • Using only the rear brake: rear wheel easily locks up
  • Using only the front brake: risk of flipping over the bars

Brake Before Corners

  • Complete braking on the straight
  • Do not brake while cornering, only steer
  • Accelerate after exiting the corner

Signs of Brake Overheating

If any of the following occur during the descent:

  • Noticeably reduced braking power
  • Smoke coming from the rotor
  • Pungent burning smell
  • Unusual squealing

Immediate action:

  1. Stop at a safe location
  2. Fully release the brakes, let them air-cool for 3–5 minutes
  3. Check pad thickness and rotor condition
  4. If severely abnormal, consider taking a shuttle down the mountain

Long-Term Maintenance

Every 1,000 km

  • Check brake pad thickness
  • Clean rotors

Every 3,000 km

  • Replace brake pads (if worn to the limit)
  • Check brake fluid color

Every 5,000–8,000 km

  • Replace rotors (if thinned or warped)
  • Replace brake fluid (DOT fluid annually)

Climbing Wuling taxes your legs; descending taxes your braking system.
