Intermediate (1-3 years)
- Periodize: use Billat in the base phase, Seiler in the build phase, and add Tabata in the final 4 weeks before a race
- Two VO2 sessions per week, drawn from different schools
Advanced (>3 years, chasing KOMs or a sub-4-hour Wuling)
- Use all three, rotating based on that week’s goal and fatigue
- Key weeks (6-8 weeks before target race): Seiler 4x8 as the primary workout, paired with one Tabata sprint session
Implementation Notes
- Warm up thoroughly: at least 20 minutes before VO2 work, with the last 5 minutes progressing to 90% FTP to open up the heart and lungs
