Multi-Day Consecutive Cycling Training: Pros, Cons, and Execution of Block Training

Pro cyclists routinely do 5-10 day high-intensity training camps that produce explosive gains; but if amateur riders copy them, the usual result is being completely unable to train for the following 2-3 weeks. Block Training (consecutive days of high-intensity training) is a double-edged sword: used correctly it’s a shortcut, used wrongly it’s a deep pit.

This article lays out the science behind Block Training, its pros and cons, who it suits, and three versions that amateur riders can safely execute.

What Block Training Is

Block Training is not “riding many days in a row”, but rather “concentrating training in a specific intensity zone for 3-5 consecutive days”, allowing a single system (VO2max, Threshold, Sprint) to receive a supercompensation stimulus.

The Science: Why Consecutive Stimulus Works

1. Overload Principle

Traditional training fully recovers between stimuli, and the body “bounces back” a little each time. Block Training deliberately lets the stimulus accumulate; the body can’t fully recover temporarily, and instead produces a larger supercompensation rebound during the recovery period.

2. Molecular Signal Accumulation

Rønnestad’s 2014 study in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports showed that 3 consecutive days of VO2max intervals produced significantly stronger PGC-1α signaling for mitochondrial biogenesis than the same number of sessions spread evenly over 3 weeks.

3. Mental Toughness

Pro coaches believe that consecutive days of training stress also trains the mind to “keep executing while fatigued”, which is especially important for multi-day races (Grand Tours, Taiwan’s Tour of East Coast).

Benefits of Block Training

  1. Rapid short-term gains: 2 weeks after a 5-day camp, FTP commonly rises 5-10W
  2. Time concentration: cram all the high intensity into a long weekend, then recover easily on weekdays
  3. Multi-day race simulation: suits preparation for Tour of East Coast, Taiwan KOM series
  4. Mental breakthrough: proving you can do consecutive high-intensity days builds confidence

Risks of Block Training

  1. High OTS risk: with insufficient recovery, consecutive high intensity can quickly lead to overtraining
  2. Immune crash: high intensity +5 days can leave the immune system in an open window for up to 2 weeks
  3. Form breakdown causing injury: posture drifts under fatigue, easily triggering knee, back, and neck injuries
  4. Big lifestyle impact: needs 3-5 consecutive days with almost nothing else to do; heavy impact on family and work

Who It Suits and Who It Doesn’t

Suitable groups

  • Advanced amateurs with CTL >70: solid base, high tolerance
  • Those with a long holiday available: Lunar New Year, Tomb Sweeping Day, or long weekends provide 4-5 consecutive days
  • Those targeting multi-day races: island tours, Tour of East Coast, multi-day Gran Fondos
  • Those with professional coaching: can monitor HRV, TSS, RPE and adjust dynamically

Unsuitable groups

  • Beginners with CTL <50: insufficient base; they’ll blow up right after executing it
  • Irregular training: people without a stable weekly training habit
  • High-stress, busy work: other life stress is already near the ceiling
  • Currently sick with a cold or recovering from OTS: absolutely not

Three Blocks Amateur Riders Can Execute

Version 1: 3-Day SST Block (Mildest)

Suited to: intermediate amateurs with CTL 50-70

3-day block accumulates 255 TSS; best done over a weekend plus a Monday off. The following 3-4 days need plenty of Zone 2 recovery.

Version 2: 4-Day VO2 Block (Advanced)

Suited to: advanced amateurs with CTL 70-90

4-day block accumulates 325 TSS; inserting a Z2 day in the middle is key, otherwise day 3 falls apart.

Version 3: 5-Day Climbing Camp (Advanced)

Suited to: advanced amateurs with CTL >90 targeting Wuling or KOM

5-day block accumulates 800 TSS; amateur riders typically do 500-600 TSS per week, and this block compresses that into 5 days. At least 5-7 days of deep taper must follow, otherwise the OTS probability exceeds 50%.

5 Execution Principles for Block Training

1. Pre-taper the week before the block

Drop the week before the block by 20-30% TSS so you enter the block in a positive TSB state (+5 or higher).

2. Monitor daily HRV and morning heart rate

  • HRV more than 15% below baseline: drop that day to Z2 recovery
  • Morning heart rate +10 bpm: same as above
  • Subjective RPE abnormally high for two consecutive days: end the block

3. Enhanced Nutrition

  • Carbohydrates: 8-10g/kg body weight (normally 5-6g)
  • Protein: 1.8-2.2g/kg
  • Electrolytes: an additional 2-3g of sodium per day
  • 80-100g of carbohydrates per hour during training

4. Deep Taper After the Block

  • At least 3-5 days after the block ends with TSS <50% of baseline
  • Only Zone 1-Z2, no high intensity
  • Wait until HRV, morning pulse, and sleep quality all return to baseline before entering the next training cycle

5. Maximum 2-3 Blocks Per Year

Amateur riders can do a maximum of 2-3 formal Blocks per year, paired respectively with:

  • 6-8 weeks before spring races (e.g., before Wuling)
  • Mid-summer maintenance period
  • Final push before autumn

Conclusion

Block Training is the “accelerator” for amateur riders to reach the next level, but it’s not a tool everyone can use. Pushing hard with insufficient CTL will only lead to burnout, and inadequate recovery can lead to OTS. Used correctly, it can boost FTP by 5-10W within 2-3 weeks; used incorrectly, you’ll spend the next 2 months searching for form. Long weekends and holidays are the scarcest training resource for amateur riders — using a planned 3-5 day Block to gain long-term improvement is far more cost-effective than adding an extra 30 minutes of training per week. The key is: assess beforehand, monitor during, and taper afterward. If you get all three right, the Block will be your most powerful weapon this year.
