Westward Wuling Wushe-to-Cuifeng Segment: The Complete Guide to the 7% Continuous Climb

The 18 kilometers from Wushe (霧社) to Cuifeng (翠峰) is the “main battleground” of the Wuling route. It accounts for 35-40% of total time and 40% of total elevation gain, and it’s here that most riders decide the outcome of the whole ride.

Terrain Breakdown

Basic Data

  • Start: Wushe (霧社, elevation 1150m)
  • End: Cuifeng Lodge (翠峰山莊, elevation 2300m)
  • Distance: 18 km
  • Elevation gain: 1150m
  • Average gradient: 6.4%
  • Steepest: 9% (short sections)

Segment Details

Distance (km) Section Gradient Characteristics
21-25 Wushe to before Cingjing 6-7% Continuous climbing
25-28 Cingjing Farm (清境農場) area 5-6% Slightly easier, crowded with tourists
28-32 Before Bowang New Village (博望新村) 6-7% Back to steep climbing
32-36 Chunyang Forest (春陽) section 7-8% The hardest 4 kilometers
36-39 Before Cuifeng 5-6% A slight breather

Why This Section Is the Hardest

1. It’s Long

  • Sub-5-hour riders take about 95 minutes
  • Sub-6-hour riders take about 115 minutes
  • Combined with fatigue built up in earlier sections, it becomes a mental battle

2. The Gradient Is Brutal

  • An average of 6.4% is already demanding
  • The Chunyang section reaches 8-9%
  • No flat sections to recover on

3. Elevation Transition

  • Going from 1150m to 2300m puts you in an altitude-sensitive zone
  • Many riders start feeling oxygen deficiency at 1800-2000m
  • Heart rate and breathing rise disproportionately to effort

4. Psychological Expectation

  • Knowing there’s an even harder stretch ahead (16K beyond Cuifeng)
  • Creates significant mental pressure

Key Pacing Strategy

Core Principle: Steady, Never Blow Up, Keep Moving

Power Targets (Example: FTP 200W)

  • Overall average: 155-165W (78-82% of FTP)
  • Final 4K Chunyang section: drop to 150-155W (75-78% of FTP)

Heart Rate Targets

  • Overall: Zone 3 (78-82% HRmax)
  • If it spikes to Zone 4 (85%+): immediately reduce power

Cadence

  • Target 70-80 rpm
  • If below 65 rpm: shift to an easier gear
  • If above 85 rpm: you can shift slightly harder (avoid spinning out)

Detailed Section-by-Section Execution

21-25 km: The Start Matters Most

Right after leaving Wushe, when you feel fine, do not speed up. You’ve just refueled and your heart rate is still elevated — this is when you settle into a steady rhythm.

Strategy:

  • Ease from 75% to 80% of FTP over the first 2 km
  • Rhythmic breathing
  • Check your heart rate against Zone 3 every 2 km

25-28 km: The Cingjing Tourist Section

Tour buses, tourists, traffic lights. The most distractions and interruptions.

Strategy:

  • Stay focused (use earphones to block out distractions)
  • Don’t let the roadside scenery slow your rhythm
  • If you’re genuinely tired, take a brief 1-minute break

28-32 km: Before Bowang New Village

Steep climbing resumes, and by now you’ve been riding for about 2 hours 30 minutes — early fatigue sets in.

Strategy:

  • Take an energy gel or sports drink every 10 minutes
  • Focus on your breathing (don’t think about distance)
  • Shift to an easier gear to protect your muscles

32-36 km: The Chunyang Section (Hell’s 4K)

The hardest 4 kilometers of the entire Wuling route. Continuous 8-9% gradient, forested with no view to distract you.

Strategy:

  • Mental warfare — tell yourself “once this section is done, you’re through the worst”
  • Absolutely do not blow up, absolutely do not rush
  • Drop power another 5%
  • Check in on your body every 5 minutes
  • Don’t watch your speed on the computer (only track how much of the 5 km remains)

36-39 km: The Gentle Slope Before Cuifeng

Finally, a section where you can catch your breath. But don’t push hard.

Strategy:

  • Return to your normal power target
  • Prepare for the Cuifeng aid station
  • Mentally note: 39K done, 16K to go

Fueling Schedule (based on 18 km taking 90-115 minutes)

Time Distance Fueling
Start 21K 1 energy gel + sports drink
+15 min 24K 200ml water
+30 min 27K 1 energy gel
+45 min 30K 200ml water + 1/2 energy bar
+60 min 33K 1 energy gel (before Chunyang)
+75 min 36K 200ml water + 1/2 energy bar
+90 min 38K Caffeinated energy gel (preparing for the Cuifeng stop)

Mental Tactics

Tactic 1: Chunking

Instead of thinking “18 kilometers to go,” think “9 sets of 2 kilometers.” Celebrate every 2 km milestone.

Tactic 2: Reference Points

Mark 5 checkpoints on your map:

  • 25K (Cingjing)
  • 28K (Bowang)
  • 32K (start of Chunyang)
  • 36K (end of Chunyang)
  • 39K (Cuifeng)

At each one, take a deep breath and check your condition.

Tactic 3: Music Rhythm

Play a playlist on your phone:

  • Music at 80-100 BPM
  • Pedal along with the beat
  • Avoid songs that are too intense (to avoid going out too hard)

Tactic 4: Self-Talk

  • “You’ve already done half of it!”
  • “Your body knows what to do”
  • “Every pedal stroke brings you closer to the finish”

Warning Signs

Warning Sign 1: Heart Rate Rising Uncontrollably

Symptom: Heart rate keeps rising even after reducing power
Meaning: Dehydration or excessive fatigue
Response: Stop immediately for 2 minutes, drink 300ml of water, eat an energy gel

Warning Sign 2: Dizziness or Nausea

Symptom: Blurred vision, upset stomach
Meaning: Possible low blood sugar or mild altitude sickness
Response: Eat an energy gel immediately, stop and rest for 5 minutes

Warning Sign 3: Involuntary Leg Cramping

Symptom: Sudden tightness in the calf or thigh
Meaning: Electrolyte deficiency
Response: Electrolyte drink, massage, pause riding

Gear Adjustments

After 28K, Cingjing

  • If it’s cool, zip up to 70%
  • Still possible to sweat heavily even in summer

36K, Chunyang Section

  • Keep your current gear as is
  • If you feel cold, it may actually be a sign your power output is too low

Before 39K, Cuifeng

  • Consider adding layers during the Cuifeng stop
  • May need to add a windbreaker (if temperature is below 15°C)

Descent Strategy (for this section on the way down)

On the return leg from 55K to 21K:

  • Maintain a gap of 30m+
  • Complete your braking before entering corners
  • Watch for slippery surfaces on the Chunyang section
  • Watch for pedestrians in the Cingjing section

Conclusion

Wushe to Cuifeng is the soul of Wuling — it tests your patience, discipline, and mental resilience. Successfully getting through this section means you’ve completed the hardest 40% of Wuling. The remaining 16 kilometers is a high-altitude challenge, but your pacing, fueling, and gear are already dialed in — you just need to keep moving forward.
