The Cost of a Wuling PB
Starting from Puli, the Wuling Challenge covers 55K with 3,275m of climbing. A PB-level effort means:
- Creatine kinase (CK) spikes to 8–15 times your normal level
- Glycogen is almost completely depleted
- Micro-tears in slow-twitch muscle fibers (the source of DOMS)
- The immune system enters an “Open Window” state for 24–72 hours
- Oxidative stress caused by high altitude
If you schedule training because you “still feel fine,” you’ll inexplicably catch a cold next week, gain weight for no reason, and see your heart rate spiral out of control during Z2.
D+1 The Day After the Race
Body Status
- CK peaks (approximately 24–48 hours post-race)
- Muscle stiffness index is at its highest
- Leg swelling (common after descending from high altitude)
What to Do
- Breakfast: high-protein breakfast (3 eggs + 80g salmon + 2 slices of white toast)
- 30-minute walk (no cycling)
- 20 minutes of stretching + foam rolling
- Sleep 9 hours
- Hydrate with 3L+ of water
Absolutely Do NOT Do
- Do not ride (not even Z1)
- Do not get deep-tissue massage for more than 15 minutes (it worsens inflammation)
- Do not drink more than 1 celebratory beer (alcohol delays glycogen replenishment)
D+2 Second Day After the Race
Body Status
- DOMS peaks (this is why “the second day after the race hurts the most”)
- CK begins to drop but remains elevated
- Appetite returns to normal
What to Do
- Return to a normal breakfast with increased carbohydrate ratio
- 30 minutes on the indoor trainer at < 50% FTP, legs moving only, no sweating
- 15-minute warm water bath
- 30 minutes of stretching
Monitoring Metrics
- Morning resting heart rate (RHR): if more than 10 bpm above normal, take an extra rest day
- HRV: if more than 15% below baseline, take an extra rest day
D+3 Third Day After the Race
Body Status
- DOMS begins to subside
- Weight returns to pre-race levels (you’ll be 1–2kg heavier in the first two days due to swelling)
- You may experience “post-race blues”
What to Do
- 45–60 minutes of easy outdoor riding at < 60% FTP
- Keep heart rate below the Z2 ceiling
- Don’t look at the bike computer, don’t chase Strava segments
- Resume normal protein intake (1.6g/kg/day)
D+4 Fourth Day After the Race
Body Status
- Superficial muscles feel about 80% recovered
- Deep connective tissue is still repairing
- The immune system begins returning to normal
What to Do
- 60–75 minutes of outdoor riding with a few Z3 efforts (each ≤ 5 minutes)
- No FTP testing or sprinting
- Resume stretching + 30 minutes of core work
D+5 Fifth Day After the Race
Body Status
- Subjective feeling is close to normal
- But test data will still be 3–5% below pre-race levels
What to Do
- 90 minutes of Z2 + 2 × 8 minutes of Sweet Spot
- Check whether RHR and HRV have returned to baseline
- Start planning next week’s training schedule
D+6 ~ D+7
Recovery Completion Checklist
You’re only truly recovered if you can tick ≥ 5 of these:
- [ ] RHR back to baseline ± 3 bpm for 2 consecutive days
- [ ] HRV ≥ 95% of baseline for 2 consecutive days
- [ ] Heart rate-to-power ratio during Z2 riding is back to pre-race levels
- [ ] DOMS completely gone
- [ ] Sleep efficiency > 85%
- [ ] Weight stable and no longer dropping
- [ ] Appetite, mood, and libido back to normal
Post-Race Nutrition Weekly Timeline
| Day | Focus | Carbs per kg body weight | Protein per kg body weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| D+1 | Acute inflammation suppression | 5g | 2.0g |
| D+2 | Glycogen replenishment | 6g | 1.8g |
| D+3~4 | Structural repair | 5g | 1.8g |
| D+5~7 | Return to normal | 4–5g | 1.6g |
Anti-inflammatory recommendations: Increase Omega-3 (mackerel, flaxseed oil), turmeric, and blueberries. Reduce alcohol, fried foods, and refined sugar.
Common Mistakes
Mistake 1: Testing on D+2 to “see how much you’ve recovered”
An FTP test extends recovery by 3–5 days. Wait until the full D+7 period is over before testing.
Mistake 2: A 100K group cruise with friends on D+3
Power easily blows up during social rides, and 4 hours of Z2 is still too much for a body whose CK hasn’t returned to baseline.
Mistake 3: Lifting weights immediately on D+1
Weight training worsens muscle fiber damage. Wait until at least D+5 before resuming normal strength training.
Don’t Overlook Psychological Recovery
The “goal vacuum” after a PB brings mild depression (post-race blues). Countermeasures:
- Start planning your next goal from D+3 (it doesn’t have to be a race; a new route works too)
- Review the race details with riding buddies (photos, Strava segment records)
- Accept that “your form will inevitably drop” — this is the starting point of a new season
Conclusion
A Wuling PB isn’t the finish line — the quality of your 7-day post-race recovery determines the starting point of your next goal. Save this schedule on your phone, tick off each day, and you’ll find yourself improving year after year.
