Why Wuling Requires Breathing Research

From Puli to the summit of Wuling, the elevation rises 2,800m, and the partial pressure of oxygen drops by about 22%. During climbing, ventilation is 50–80% higher than at sea level, and respiratory muscle oxygen consumption accounts for 8–12% of total oxygen uptake. Poor breathing = wasted oxygen and power.

More importantly: breathing rhythm affects core stability, cadence efficiency, and even the switching of energy metabolism pathways.

Definitions of Three Breathing Rhythms

4-4 Breathing (Inhale 4 beats, Exhale 4 beats)

  • Suitable for: Heart rate Z2–Z3 (Wuling’s Renzhiguan section, warm-up segment)
  • Corresponding cadence: 60–75 rpm
  • One full breathing cycle = 8 cadence beats

3-3 Breathing (Inhale 3 beats, Exhale 3 beats)

  • Suitable for: Heart rate Z3–Z4 (Wuling’s Wushe to Cuifeng section, main effort zone)
  • Corresponding cadence: 75–90 rpm
  • One full breathing cycle = 6 cadence beats

2-2 Breathing (Inhale 2 beats, Exhale 2 beats)

  • Suitable for: Heart rate Z4–Z5 (final 2K push on Wuling)
  • Corresponding cadence: ≥ 85 rpm
  • One full breathing cycle = 4 cadence beats

Natural Breathing (No deliberate synchronization with cadence)

  • Suitable for: All zones
  • Drawback: Above Z4, “unconscious ipsilateral locking” tends to occur (same-side leg and same-side breathing coupling), increasing the load on the iliopsoas muscle

Comparison of Measured Data

A rider with an FTP of 280W and a body weight of 68kg was tested in the lab, with 30-minute steady-state power output and heart rate:

Key finding: At 90% FTP intensity, 3-3 synchronized breathing yields a heart rate 4 bpm lower than natural breathing, with an RPE 1 point lower. On a long climb, saving 4 bpm of heart rate is equivalent to gaining 10–15% more endurance.

Breathing Reference for Each Section of Wuling

Renzhiguan Section (0–16K, elevation 500–800m)

  • Recommended: 4-4
  • Heart rate: < 155 bpm (below 80% of max heart rate)
  • Focus: Inhale through the nose, exhale through the mouth; establish rhythm and avoid sprinting too early

Wushe Section (16–27K, elevation 800–1100m)

  • Recommended: Alternate between 4-4 and 3-3
  • Heart rate: 155–165 bpm
  • Focus: Begin increasing exhalation force to actively expel CO2

Cuifeng Section (27–45K, elevation 1100–2300m)

  • Recommended: 3-3
  • Heart rate: 160–170 bpm
  • Focus: Breathing frequency rises + altitude effects begin; active deep breathing is required

Yuanfeng to Wuling (45–55K, elevation 2300–3275m)

  • Recommended: 3-3 or 2-2, switch based on intensity
  • Heart rate: Can reach 175 bpm
  • Focus: Adopt an “exhale-led breathing” strategy—forceful exhalation automatically triggers a deep inhalation

Why Exhalation Matters More Than Inhalation

Most riders climb with “forceful inhalation and passive exhalation”—this is wrong. Reasons:

  1. At high intensity, functional residual capacity (FRC) increases, leaving too much CO2 in the lungs
  2. Active exhalation activates the transversus abdominis (core stability)
  3. During exhalation, the diaphragm returns to its resting position, allowing the next inhalation to be deeper

Training mantra: “Inhalation is passive; exhalation is active.”

How to Introduce Breathing Training

Phase 1: Static Foundation (Do at home, 5 minutes daily)

  • Seated, set a metronome to 60 bpm
  • Practice 4-4, 3-3, and 2-2 for 1 minute each
  • Focus: Exhalation slightly longer than inhalation by 10%

Phase 2: Trainer Introduction (Twice per week)

  • Use 4-4 during Z2 segments
  • Use 3-3 during Sweet Spot segments
  • Use 2-2 during VO2max segments

Phase 3: On-Road Validation

  • Find a continuous 5–8% climb (e.g., Route 139 B)
  • Ride the same section once with each of the three breathing patterns
  • Compare power/heart rate ratios to find the most efficient rhythm for yourself

Special Considerations at High Altitude

Above 2,500m elevation:

  • Ventilation demand increases; 3-3 may not be sufficient and may require switching to 2-2
  • Beware that “hyperventilation” can cause finger numbness and dizziness
  • Countermeasure: Lengthen exhalation to 2-3 (inhale 2 beats, exhale 3 beats)

Breathing While Out of the Saddle

When out of the saddle, the core twists, making 4-4 or 3-3 difficult to maintain. Recommendations:

  • Take a deep breath before standing up
  • Switch to 2-2 or natural breathing while out of the saddle
  • After sitting back down, take 3 deep breaths to return to rhythm

Conclusion

The outcome on Wuling is decided not only by your legs, but by your diaphragm. Incorporate breathing rhythm into your training system, and you will find that you can sustain the same power output longer and produce more power at the same heart rate. Don’t waste this free source of power.
