Don’t Assume “Train Well in the Pool, and You’ll Be Fine in the Sea”

The biggest training misconception among open-water athletes is assuming that the abilities built in the pool will transfer 100% to the ocean. The truth is: some abilities are directly transferable, some need adjustment, and some are a completely different skill set that the pool simply cannot train. Understanding these categories will prevent you from wasting your season’s training resources.

Three-Category Ability Classification Table

Directly Transferable: Your “Foundation Engine”

  • Aerobic capacity and muscular strength: The endurance and power built in the pool are effective anywhere—this is your greatest transferable asset.
  • Catch technique (EVF/high elbow): A good catch propels you further in any body of water; no need to relearn it.
  • Core roll and DPS: Efficient body mechanics are universal.

Conclusion: During the winter pool season, invest heavily in these three areas, because they are “compound-interest assets” that transfer without loss.

Needs Adjustment: Same Skills, Different Parameters

  • Breathing: In the pool, you can breathe to one side long-term; in open water, you must be able to breathe bilaterally and switch flexibly depending on wave direction. Practice bilateral breathing to the point of automation before race day.
  • Pace perception: The pool relies on walls and the clock for calibration; open water has neither. You need to develop “feel-based pacing” and accept deviations.
  • Kick/stroke rate: In waves, you often need to slightly increase stroke rate and reduce reliance on gliding to maintain rhythm; kicking may need to be more stable to counter turbulence.

Must Be Trained Separately: A World That Doesn’t Exist in the Pool

This category is the real reason “pool experts fall apart in the sea”:

  1. Sighting: Crocodile eyes, lift frequency, finding landmarks.
  2. Drafting: Positioning behind feet/at the hip, jockeying for position when rounding buoys.
  3. Pack-swimming resistance: Getting hit, getting kicked, having your vision blocked—without panicking.
  4. Cold water and psychology: Cold-shock adaptation, staying calm when you can’t see the bottom.

These can only be acquired through open-water training or targeted pool simulations, so dedicated sessions must be scheduled before race day.

Season Resource Allocation Recommendations

  • Base phase (far from race): 80% pool, focusing on the transferable engine and catch technique.
  • Specific phase (8–10 weeks before race): Introduce abilities that need adjustment (bilateral breathing, feel-based pacing, low-breathing intervals).
  • Race phase (4–6 weeks before race): At least 1 real open-water session per week, focusing on sighting/drafting/psychology—the skills that must be trained separately.

Coach’s note: Think of training resources as an investment portfolio—transferable abilities are a stable index fund (invest early, compound long-term), while open-water specifics are high-return assets you only need to load up on before race day. Allocate the timing wrong, and even maximum effort yields low efficiency.

Knowing what you can carry over and what you must retrain is itself a competitive advantage.
