Two Weeks Before the Race, Training Less Can Make You Faster—If You Do It Right
Tapering is the most counterintuitive part of the training cycle, and the one most often botched by amateur athletes. Many people, driven by anxiety, ramp up their training right before a race and end up starting fatigued; others rest completely and lose their feel for the water. A well-executed taper can improve swimming performance by several percentage points—provided you get the three dials right: volume, intensity, and frequency.
The Physiology Behind Tapering
Training simultaneously builds two things in the body: fitness and fatigue. Fatigue dissipates faster than fitness. The essence of tapering is: let fatigue drop quickly while preserving as much of the hard-earned fitness and feel as possible. When the fatigue curve falls below the fitness curve, you enter your “peak state.”
How to Turn the Three Dials
| Variable | How to Adjust | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Training volume | Reduce significantly, roughly 40–60% before race day | Volume is the main source of fatigue; cutting it lets fatigue fade fast |
| Intensity | Maintain, keep a few short race-pace sets | Dropping intensity leads to loss of fitness and neuromuscular feel |
| Frequency | Reduce only slightly or maintain | Maintains feel and water sense, avoids going “stale” |
In one sentence: Cut volume, keep intensity, maintain frequency. The most common mistake is the opposite—not cutting volume enough while stripping out all intensity, leaving you with lingering fatigue and a dulled feel.
Amateur Triathlon/Long-Distance Swim Taper Template (Using 2 Weeks Pre-Race as an Example)
- 2 weeks out: Cut total volume by roughly 30–40%. Keep your usual number of weekly sessions. Shorten each session, but include 4–6 short race-pace sets (e.g., 6×50 at race pace with long rest).
- 1 week out: Reduce total volume further to 40–50% of your normal load. You may drop one session. Make each session even shorter, focusing only on short, sharp race-pace efforts plus plenty of technique work.
- 2–3 days out: Very short “activation” sessions—warm-up, a few short accelerations, and an easy cool-down. Never train to the point of fatigue.
- Throughout: Maximize sleep, replenish glycogen through nutrition, and manage your mindset (anxiety makes you want to sneak in extra training—resist it).
Common Tapering Mistakes
- Complete rest: Your feel and neuromuscular sharpness decline, leaving you “rusty” in the water. Train less, but don’t stop entirely.
- Cutting intensity too: If you only do slow swimming, the peak never arrives. You must keep short race-pace stimuli.
- Adding training at the last minute: Pre-race anxiety leads to cramming in big sessions, putting back all the fatigue you worked to shed—the most common and most damaging mistake.
- Making major technique/equipment changes right before the race: The taper period is for “polishing,” not “rebuilding.” New wetsuits and new stroke changes should have been tested much earlier.
How to Know Your Taper Worked
The ideal feeling: 2–3 days before the race, you start to feel “light in the body, powerful in the pull, and eager to get in the water.” If you still feel heavy and fatigued right up to race day, you usually didn’t cut volume enough or you snuck in extra training. When the taper is done right, you’ll feel “faster and more efficient than in training” on race day.
Coach’s note: Tapering doesn’t require physical effort—it requires discipline: the discipline to hold back from training. All your hard work in training exists so you can “afford to rest” in the final two weeks. Those who dare not taper are leaving the season’s investment on the training ground instead of bringing it to the starting line.
Sometimes, less is the highest form of more.
