Freestyle Asymmetry Correction: Why You Keep Drifting to One Side and Getting One-Sided Shoulder Pain
You May Have Been Swimming a “Crooked Freestyle” All Along
Do you keep drifting to the same side in open water without realizing it? Does one shoulder feel especially sore? Does your goggle side splash more when you breathe? These all point to the same badly underrated problem: left-right asymmetry. It makes you swim extra distance in open water for nothing, and it concentrates load on one shoulder, planting the seeds of swimmer’s shoulder.
Where Asymmetry Comes From

Core concept: what you observe as “drifting to one side” is the result. The real cause is almost always breathing-side habit + asymmetric propulsion between the two sides.
Three-Step Self-Diagnosis
- Eyes-closed straight-line test: In the pool, swim 6–10 strokes with your eyes closed, then open them and see how far off-course you’ve drifted and in which direction. The more you drift, and the more consistently to one side, the more severe your asymmetry.
- Left-right stroke count comparison: Swim 50 meters each using single-arm freestyle on each side, and compare stroke count and perceived effort between the two arms — a bigger gap means the weaker side is more underdeveloped.
- Video / training partner observation: Watch from the pool deck or underwater to see whether hand entry crosses the centerline and whether roll is symmetrical on both sides.
Correction Program (4–6 Weeks)
Targets three directions: forcing symmetry, strengthening the weak side, and correcting the crossover entry.
- Weeks 1–2 | Mandatory bilateral breathing: 8×50m, breathing every 3 strokes, forcing roll and timing to become symmetrical on both sides. This is the most direct correction tool.
- Weeks 2–3 | Weak-side single-arm strengthening: 6×25m single-arm freestyle, with 2 extra reps on the weak side, focusing on a complete catch and roll on that side.
- Weeks 3–4 | Crossover correction: Do “fingertip drag + wide entry” drills, deliberately aligning hand entry with the shoulder line to fix the S-shaped snaking path.
- Weeks 5–6 | Integration and verification: Repeat the eyes-closed straight-line test — drift should be noticeably reduced. During race-pace swims, check whether the drift is still there.
Long-Term Prescription for Your Breathing Pattern
If you prefer breathing on one side for oxygen supply during races, that’s fine — but training must include a large amount of bilateral breathing to maintain symmetry. Treat bilateral breathing as “symmetry maintenance,” and one-sided breathing as your “race-day oxygen strategy.” The two should work together, not replace each other.
The Link Between Asymmetry and Shoulder Injury
Swimmers with asymmetry typically place higher, more frequent load on one shoulder, and combined with technical compensation, this is exactly the breeding ground for one-sided swimmer’s shoulder. Correcting your symmetry doesn’t just help you swim straighter — it’s also part of shoulder-injury prevention. Don’t wait until it hurts to deal with it.
Coach’s note: A lot of people spend money on a GPS watch trying to figure out “why am I slow in open water,” when the answer is often written for free in the fact that “you keep drifting left.” Use the eyes-closed test first to find your own crookedness, then correct it specifically — that’s more effective than any piece of gear.
Symmetry is the shared foundation for swimming efficiently, swimming straight, and protecting your shoulders.
