Wetsuit Rules Fully Explained: Water Temperature Thresholds, Thickness Limits, and How to Decide Whether to Wear One
The Two Key Values of a Wetsuit
Triathlon wetsuits provide two key advantages: warmth (preventing hypothermia in cold water) and buoyancy (lifting the body, improving body position, reducing drag—essentially free speed). For weaker swimmers, the energy-saving effect of buoyancy is especially significant.
Rules Framework
Rules vary slightly between race systems, but the general principles are as follows:

| Neoprene swim cap | Usually only permitted at wetsuit-legal water temperatures |
Be sure to confirm which rules system applies to your race beforehand, and pay attention to the official final water temperature determination announced before the race.
How to Decide at Boundary Water Temperatures
When the water temperature is near the upper limit (e.g., 23–24.5°C), whether to wear one is a trade-off:
- Benefits of wearing: buoyancy saves energy, potentially faster, peace of mind
- Risks of wearing: high water temp + wetsuit = rising core temperature, risk of overheating on longer distances, elevated heart rate
- Decision factors: swimming ability (weaker swimmers benefit more from buoyancy), race distance (overheating risk is low for short distances), personal heat tolerance, air temperature
Generally speaking: sprint/standard distance with weaker swimming → lean toward wearing; long distance + high water temp + heat-sensitive → consider a swim skin instead.
Swim Skin (Speed Suit)
When water temperature exceeds the wetsuit limit, many races allow swim skins / speedsuits—no warmth, no added buoyancy, but reduced water drag from fabric against skin. They are typically required to be non-rubber material with no buoyancy, and also require official certification.
Buying and Fit Considerations
- Fit matters more than brand: too loose lets water in and increases drag; too tight restricts shoulder stroke
- Shoulder flexibility has the greatest impact on stroke efficiency and is the main upgrade point in higher-end models
- When trying on, perform a full stroke motion to confirm the shoulders and neck are not restricted
- Be sure to do at least one open-water test swim before race day to familiarise yourself with your body position and breathing rhythm after the buoyancy change
Pre-Race Preparation
- Trim fingernails to avoid snagging when putting on and taking off
- Apply lubricant to the ankles and inner wrists (avoiding seams) for faster removal
- Practice the T1 removal motion, aiming to get the suit down to the ankles within 15 seconds
Coach’s perspective: A wetsuit is the cheapest “speed upgrade” allowed within the rules, but don’t forget it is also a source of heat load. Wear it in cold water; think carefully before wearing it in warm water.
