Adolescents Are Not Miniature Adults
Children and adolescents are at a stage where their growth plates (epiphyseal plates) have not yet closed and their bones and tendons are still developing, so training principles differ from those for adults. The core philosophy is: long-term athletic literacy and health take priority over short-term results, avoiding early specialization and excessive single-sport high-impact loads. Train incorrectly, and the damage may be to the growth plates—and to their love of the sport.

Training Principles
- Prioritize variety: Encourage multiple sports and comprehensive athletic abilities (running, jumping, throwing, agility, swimming, ball sports) rather than focusing only on long-distance running at a young age. Diverse stimuli are better for long-term development and injury prevention.
- Moderate, progressive volume and intensity: Focus on “learning through play, progressing gradually,” avoiding adult-style high weekly volume and large amounts of high-intensity intervals; strictly adhere to progression, adequate rest days, seasonal periodization, and off-seasons.
- Technique and enjoyment at the core: This stage is the golden period for building running form, rhythm, exercise habits, and a “love of sport”; excessive performance pressure is the main reason for dropout.
- Strength training is acceptable, but must be done right: Under qualified supervision, strength and coordination training focused on movement quality and bodyweight/light loads is safe and beneficial for adolescents (dispelling the myth that “kids shouldn’t lift weights”); the emphasis is on technical supervision, not chasing weights.
- Listen to growth signals: Actively reduce volume during growth spurts, and enhance flexibility and technique; persistent joint/apophyseal pain should be rested and evaluated by a doctor (don’t dismiss it as mere “growing pains” and delay treatment).
Quantitative Reference (Conservative, Individualized)
There is no single number that applies to every child, but the general rule is: weekly volume and high-intensity ratios far lower than adults’, clear rest days, alternation between season and off-season, and avoiding year-round single-sport specialization. Any pain, performance regression, or loss of interest in training is a signal to reduce volume or adjust. The rate of volume increase should be more conservative and more individualized than the adult 10% rule.
Health and Nutrition
Energy and nutritional demands are high during the growth period—ensure intake is sufficient to support growth + training, avoiding low energy availability (associated with stress fractures, developmental and hormonal issues, in both sexes). Adequate sleep is especially critical for recovery during developmental training.
Environment and Psychology
- Be more cautious with heat/cold tolerance and hydration education (children’s thermoregulation differs from adults’).
- Coach/parent language focused on effort and enjoyment, rather than a single race result, is key to sustaining long-term commitment.
- Ensure safety equipment, routes, and supervision are in place.
The Bottom Line for Parents and Coaches
If you can only remember one sentence: the goal of this stage is to raise someone who is “still exercising twenty years from now,” not to squeeze out a junior champion right now. The precocious results bought with early specialization and excessive training often end in injury and premature dropout.
Coach’s perspective: When I look at adolescent training, I ask only one question—does he still want to run three years from now? The developing body and the passion for sport are both still growing; forcing the pace injures the growth plates, and the interest too. Variety, progression, having fun, eating enough, sleeping enough—time will provide the rest of the answers.
