Dehydration/electrolytes may be contributing or aggravating factors in specific situations (heavy sweating in high heat, certain populations), but “hydrate and salt up and you won’t cramp” is not the whole story.

- Environmental support: In high heat for prolonged efforts, prioritize hydration, sodium intake, and heat acclimatization (targeting the “contributing factor” piece).
- Individual history: Frequent crampers should log their situations (pace, hills, temperature, fueling) to identify personal trigger patterns and adjust accordingly.
Handling “Impending Cramp” During a Race
Cramps often have warning signs (muscle twitching, tightness). At this point, actively slow down, shorten your stride, increase cadence, and shift the muscles being loaded (e.g., power hiking uphill) can often resolve the issue before full lock-up—far better than pushing through until a full cramp hits and then dealing with it.
Common Mistakes
- Blaming all cramps on salt deficiency and popping salt tablets while refusing to adjust pace and training load.
- Trying to “run through” a cramp with hard contractions/sprinting—this can make it worse.
- Racing far beyond training readiness, then blaming nutrition.
Coach’s perspective: When an athlete comes to me with cramps, my first question isn’t “how much did you drink,” it’s “how much faster than training did you race, and how many hills did you climb?” Cramps are mostly the muscle protesting, ‘What you’re asking me to do exceeds what you’ve trained me for.’ Stretching it out hard is the fastest fix in the moment; long-term, honest sport-specific training beats a whole bottle of salt tablets.
