No Periodization, Your Training Plan Is Just Random Accumulated Fatigue
Many amateur runners train by “following whatever workout plan they see.” Intervals, tempo, long runs are scheduled randomly, resulting in long-term plateaus and recurring minor injuries. The essence of periodization is: arranging different training stimuli in a logical order and proportion along a timeline, so adaptations stack systematically, fatigue is managed, and you peak on race day.
The Four-Phase Framework

Key Points for Each Phase
Base Phase: The Foundation Cannot Be Skipped
This phase is the most counterintuitive and the most often skipped. Large amounts of easy Zone 2 volume builds mitochondrial, capillary, and fat-oxidation capacity, while introducing strength work and technical drills. If the foundation is thin, the house built during the build phase won’t be tall and will easily collapse (get injured). There are no shortcuts.
Build Phase: Increase the Engine’s Displacement
On top of a solid aerobic base, systematically introduce threshold (tempo/cruise intervals) and VO2max intervals, following the 80/20 rule and capping high-intensity work at 1–2 sessions per week. Quality sessions should progressively increase in load rather than jumping around randomly each week.
Peak/Specific Phase: Train “the Race Itself”
Training converges toward specificity for the target event—marathoners do race-pace long runs and simulations; 5K/10K runners do intervals at near-race intensity. Volume can drop slightly, but intensity becomes more focused and precise. The pre-race simulation is the core validation of this phase.
Recovery Phase: Adaptations Are Realized During Rest
Two types: the pre-race taper (volume drops significantly, intensity is maintained, fatigue is flushed to peak—see the dedicated taper article); and the post-season transition/recovery period (several weeks of low intensity, cross-training, mental recharging, repairing accumulated wear and tear, and storing energy for the next cycle). Skipping the post-season recovery period is one of the main causes of long-term overtraining and stagnation.
Principles for Connecting the Phases
- From broad to specific, from volume to intensity: Build aerobic breadth first, then add specific intensity, and finally converge on race specificity.
- Insert a deload microcycle every 3–4 weeks: Let adaptations manifest and keep ACWR in the sweet spot (echoing load management).
- Emphasize only one main stimulus at a time: Piling on volume and intensity simultaneously means failing at both, plus injury.
- Work backward: From the target race date, count back the weeks needed for taper, peak, build, and base, then schedule the sessions.
Common Mistakes
- Skipping the base phase and jumping straight to intervals (fast early progress, but you hit a wall quickly and get injured).
- Doing moderate intensity all season (the gray zone without periodization—high monotony, poor progress).
- Never scheduling recovery periods across the season, leading to year-after-year stagnation or chronic fatigue.
- Trying to build volume and chase intensity at the same time, with no clear priority.
Simplified Version for Time-Constrained Amateurs
If you can’t manage fine-grained periodization, doing just three things puts you ahead of most runners: (1) Lay down several solid weeks of pure aerobic base early in the season; (2) deload every 3–4 weeks; (3) taper 2–3 weeks before the race and give yourself a few weeks of recovery after the season.
Coach’s perspective: To judge whether a training plan is “actually accumulating,” I look at whether it has direction—whether it builds a foundation first, then strengthens, then specializes, and finally flushes fatigue. People who follow random plans are training for “random fatigue”; those who understand periodization are depositing into their race-day account with every single session. Foundation, rhythm, convergence—get these three things in the right order, and the results will follow naturally.
