Tubeless Is Not a Free Lunch

Tubeless systems have become the mainstream recommendation for road and gravel in recent years, mainly due to lower rolling resistance and better puncture resistance. But it is not a painless upgrade—the installation threshold, sealant maintenance, and handling of certain flat scenarios are all real costs. Objectively breaking down the pros and cons is the only way to avoid being misled by one-sided marketing narratives.

Why Rolling Resistance Is Lower

The repeated deformation between the traditional inner tube and the tire, and of the inner tube itself, produces hysteresis energy loss. Tubeless removes this inner-tube friction layer, so rolling resistance is generally lower at the same tire pressure. Combined with the ability to run lower pressures (improving grip and vibration absorption without excessively increasing rolling resistance), the overall efficiency advantage on rough roads is even more pronounced—this also ties into the theme of power leakage on cobbled sections.

Sealant: The Price of Automatic Sealing

Sealant can automatically seal small punctures, which is the biggest selling point of tubeless. But sealant dries out and loses effectiveness over time, requiring periodic checks and top-ups; a neglected tubeless setup can be worse off than an inner tube when a puncture occurs. The so-called “maintenance-free” claim is a misconception—the accurate phrasing is “a different maintenance model.”

Whether You Should Go Tubeless

  • Frequently riding gravel/rough/puncture-prone roads: the benefit is clear, worth it
  • Willing to maintain sealant regularly and accept the installation threshold: suitable
  • Pure commuting, no desire to deal with sealant, seeking zero maintenance: inner tubes remain reasonable
  • Regardless, carry plugs and a backup plan at all times to handle severe cuts

The Reality of Severe Cuts

When sealant cannot seal a large cut or sidewall tear, you still need to use a plug, or ultimately install a tube as a rescue. Treating tubeless as “never flat” is dangerously optimistic. Mature users understand it as “greatly reducing the chance of stopping for small punctures, but still needing a disaster plan.”

Tubeless is a genuinely effective technology, but one that has been overly romanticized. It is indeed faster and more puncture-resistant, at the cost of a higher installation threshold and a sealant ecosystem you must continuously maintain. It is not a “set it and forget it” upgrade, but an investment that demands ongoing attention—whether it is worth it depends on the roads you ride, and whether you are willing to be its caretaker.
