The "Race of the Falling Leaves" in Lombardy: Season-End Fatigue, Long Climbs, and the Finale of Descending Attacks
The Final Judgment of the Season
Known as the “Race of the Falling Leaves” (Il Lombardia), it takes place at the tail end of the season. By then, a full year’s accumulated fatigue is written into every rider’s legs, and it delivers the season’s final test of endurance and nerve through long climbs followed by technical descents where attacks are launched.
Lombardia’s Closing Formula
| Variable | Nature | Ability It Filters |
|---|---|---|
| Timing at season’s end | Deepest accumulated fatigue of the year | Full-season endurance decay rate (echoing endurance) |
| Long climbs | Medium-to-long distance, steady rhythm | Threshold endurance (same origin as Liège) |
| Technical descent after climbs | Fatal attacks can be launched here | Descending line choice and nerve (echoing descending skill) |
| Distance (approx. 250 km) | Long | Residual power under fatigue |
Why the “Timing” Itself Is the Difficulty
Half of Lombardia’s uniqueness comes from its position—the end of the season. After a year of racing accumulation, what truly separates winners isn’t who is absolutely strongest, but who has decayed the least in endurance over the whole season and who hasn’t been drained dry yet (echoing crash economics and the endurance theme). It tests “an entire year,” not just the day itself.
Descending Attacks: Lombardia’s Traditional Killing Move
Lombardia has repeatedly been decided on the technical descent following a long climb—those who dare to attack with line choice and nerve here can gap the field without extra pedaling effort (echoing that descending is free time). This makes it a bookend with Sanremo, opening and closing the season: both finish with “short climb + descent,” but Sanremo tests the residual explosiveness of a new season’s start, while Lombardia tests the residual endurance after a season of fatigue—the demands are exactly opposite.
Core Abilities for Preparing for Lombardia
- Maintain a low endurance decay rate all season, with residual power left at season’s end (echoing endurance)
- Threshold endurance for medium-to-long climbs (same origin as Liège)
- Attacking nerve and line choice on technical descents after climbs (echoing descending skill)
- Psychological resilience in the late season and avoiding overtraining (echoing the overtraining continuum)
Lombardia is the final word of a year of racing. It doesn’t ask how strong you were at the start of the year; it only asks how much you have left by October—the season’s endurance decay, late-season fatigue, and whether you dare to gamble once more on the descent. It and Sanremo are like the first and last chapters of a book: both close with a short climb and a descent, yet one tests the explosiveness of a new season and the other tests what remains of a whole year. Whoever can win at both ends has proven they never truly cracked all year long.
