The Multiple Effects of Cold on Exercise
Cold is not just “a bit colder”—it comprehensively alters exercise physiology from muscles, metabolism, and the cardiovascular system to decision-making. Understanding these pitfalls is essential to avoid hypothermia, cramping, and pacing errors during winter training and cold-weather races.
Muscles and Force Production
A drop in muscle temperature reduces enzyme activity, nerve conduction velocity, and contraction speed, causing maximal explosive power and muscle power output to decline (for roughly every 1°C drop in muscle temperature, explosive power can fall by several percentage points). This is also why colder days require longer, more thorough warm-ups, and why sprinting and explosive performance are inherently limited in the cold. Cold muscles are also more prone to strains.
Fuel Selection
In cold conditions, the body tends to rely more heavily on carbohydrates (glycolysis), while fat oxidation is relatively suppressed. Combined with the extra glycogen consumed by shivering thermogenesis, glycogen depletion during prolonged cold exercise can occur faster than expected—winter long rides and cold-weather ultra-endurance events still require aggressive carbohydrate intake.

The Pacing Illusion: Starting Too Fast in Cold Weather
A key and often overlooked point: in cool conditions, heat dissipation is efficient, and the body “doesn’t feel hot, feels comfortable,” causing athletes to unconsciously push the pace too hard at the start and in the early stages, because the body lacks the early “overheating brake” signal that high temperatures provide. Many winter marathon blow-ups in the latter half stem from this. Countermeasure: control pace objectively by power/pacing, and don’t be misled by “feeling easy.”
Hypothermia and “Paradoxical Undressing”
Prolonged cold exposure (especially wet and windy conditions, sweat-soaked clothing after exercise, and reduced heat production from a slowing pace) can lead to hypothermia: coordination and judgment are impaired first, and in severe cases “paradoxical undressing” occurs (feeling hot and removing clothing)—this is a dangerous warning sign. Ultra-long cold-weather events and mountain activities require windproof, waterproof insulating layers, and vigilance about insufficient heat production once pace drops.
The Cold Dehydration Trap
Cold causes centralization of blood and “cold diuresis,” and with a blunted thirst sensation and sweat evaporating quickly in cold wind without being noticed, athletes often underestimate dehydration. In winter, you must still hydrate proactively on a schedule—don’t rely on thirst alone.
Airway Protection
Cold, dry air is a common trigger for exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (prevalent among endurance athletes). Sensitive individuals can use a neck gaiter or mask to create a warm, humid buffer in front of the mouth and nose, choose milder times of day, warm up thoroughly, and use medication as prescribed by a physician when necessary.
Warm-Up and Clothing Strategies
- Warm up longer and more progressively, raising muscle temperature before going into high intensity.
- Dress in adjustable layers (core insulation, moisture-wicking after sweating) to avoid sweat-soaked clothing rapidly stripping body heat in the wind.
- Prioritize warmth for extremities (hands, ears, head) to maintain dexterity and comfort.
The most dangerous thing about cold weather isn’t the cold—it’s that it makes you “feel easy.” Without the overheating brake of high temperatures, you’ll start too fast, forget to hydrate, and underestimate hypothermia—treat objective pacing, proactive hydration, and layered insulation as discipline, and don’t trust the comfort illusion the cold wind gives you.
