Taper Is Cashing In Your Training
A taper is the systematic reduction of training load 1–3 weeks before a race, allowing accumulated fatigue to dissipate and adaptations to surface, bringing your “form” to a peak on race day. It is one of the highest return-on-investment operations in sports science: meta-analyses show that a proper taper can yield performance improvements of roughly a few percentage points—for endurance events, that’s the difference between a placing and a PB. Almost no other single intervention can buy you that much in the final week before a race by simply doing less.
Why Training Less Makes You Faster
Understood through the fitness-fatigue model (see the CTL/ATL/TSB article): fitness (chronic, CTL) decays slowly, while fatigue (acute, ATL) dissipates quickly. After reducing volume, fatigue drops rapidly while fitness barely declines, TSB (form) turns moderately positive, muscle glycogen is topped off, muscle damage is repaired, hormones and autonomic nervous system stabilize, and the mind feels fresh—the body “cashes in” the potential built from months of prior training.
How to Turn the Four Taper Dials

The core principle in one sentence: cut volume, keep intensity, don’t slash frequency. The most fatal taper mistake is “almost total rest or all-easy all week”—fatigue clears, but top-end ability and race feel go blunt along with it.
Individualizing the Timeline
- Taper length depends on event duration, individual training load, and recovery capacity: high-volume athletes and ultra-endurance events typically need a longer taper; those with lower volume need less. Common endurance events use 1–2 weeks; marathons/long-distance can reach 2–3 weeks.
- Too short: fatigue hasn’t fully cleared, form is compromised.
- Too long: fitness and neuromuscular feel are lost, prone to feeling “flat” and restless.
- There is no universal number of days; calibrate based on feedback from past race experience (record each taper length and how you felt on race day).
Supporting Measures: Nutrition, Psychology, and Life
- Glycogen and nutrition: with reduced training volume during the taper, carbs don’t need to be cut proportionally; combine with glycogen supercompensation in the final 1–2 days before the race (see the glycogen supercompensation article). Note that reduced volume plus normal food intake may cause slight weight gain (partly glycogen-bound water—normal and beneficial).
- Reduce psychological fatigue too: a taper isn’t just physical. Simultaneously lower life and cognitive stress before the race (see the mental fatigue article) to recharge mental batteries; otherwise the body is fresh but the brain is still drained.
- Don’t add extra training at the last minute: the biggest temptation during a taper is “it feels too easy, I’m afraid I haven’t trained enough” and adding volume on the fly—this ruins the taper. In the final week before a race, you can almost never “train in” more fitness, only “train in” more fatigue.
Monitoring
Use HRV/resting heart rate stabilizing, subjective freshness rising, and short high-intensity “legs feeling better” as signals that the taper has landed (see the HRV and PMC articles); if you still feel heavy by race day, the taper may have been too short or prior fatigue too deep.
Taper is one of the few real sciences where “doing less wins more”: cut the volume in half, keep the intensity, resist the itch to add training, and let months of training cash in all at once when the starting gun fires. The hardest thing to resist before a race isn’t the fear of not training enough—it’s the urge to train back in the fatigue you’ve worked so hard to clear.
