Why Training Zones Need Personalized Anchors
As discussed earlier (see the articles on lactate threshold and the 220 myth), if training zones are anchored to incorrect values, the entire workout plan becomes inaccurate. Laboratory incremental testing with blood sampling is the gold standard, but it’s not feasible for most people. The good news: there are several home/field alternatives that can estimate usable threshold anchors. The key is knowing what each method estimates, its margin of error, and not over-interpreting the results.

How to Choose and How to Use
- Setting the Zone 2 ceiling (most important, most often done wrong): The talk test plus the feel of “breathing smoothly through the nose / conversing easily,” combined with a heart rate ceiling, is practically sufficient to avoid riding easy workouts into the black hole (the core of polarized discipline, see the polarization article). Most amateurs’ problem isn’t that Zone 2 is calculated inaccurately—it’s that they simply ride too hard.
- Setting LT2/threshold power: If you have a power meter, the multi-duration CP method is the most robust; if you only have heart rate/pace, use the 30-minute TT method. Remember that 20-minute FTP × 0.95 is an approximation with large individual variation—don’t treat it as a sacred number.
- Setting interval intensity: Anchor it to CP/FTP or maximal effort (see the interval design article), rather than back-calculating from HRmax (see the 220 myth article).
Retesting and Calibration
Thresholds drift with training progress and the season. Retest regularly under fixed conditions (same course/trainer, warm-up, rest, avoiding caffeine/dehydration/fatigue interference). Tracking trends matters more than chasing single-test absolute precision; cross-validate with sRPE, HRV, and actual performance (see the sRPE, HRV, and PMC articles). When data conflicts with how your body feels, trust your body.
Common Mistakes
- Setting zones for the whole season based on one bad test → if the anchor is off, the whole plan is off.
- Not giving an honest all-out effort in testing (CP/FTP/TT all require genuine maximal effort, otherwise you underestimate).
- Clinging to FTP as if it were MLSS, ignoring that it’s usually on the high side.
- Never retesting, still using months-old thresholds after training has progressed, so easy workouts become less and less “easy” over time.
Not having a lab doesn’t mean you can only train blindly. An honest 20-minute test, a 30-minute TT for heart rate, or even a “can you still speak in full sentences” talk test is enough to anchor your zones in the right place—as long as you remember: these are usable estimates. Retest regularly, calibrate with your body, and don’t enshrine estimates as truth.
