Prioritize sleep, tilt the hard/easy day ratio toward recovery, increase deloading frequency, and fine-tune using subjective + performance monitoring. Recovery is not the fourth priority—it is the multiplier that makes the first three effective.

- Base Phase: Build training volume (the root of defending VO2max) + maximal strength block.
- Build Phase: Ramp up HIIT volume + shift strength toward rate of force development/plyometrics (supporting economy and explosiveness).
- Race Phase: Endurance focus + minimum effective dose of strength maintenance + structured tapering.
- Transition Phase: Active recovery + maintain baseline strength, avoiding complete detraining (detraining in aging athletes is faster and re-adaptation is slower).
- Year-round: Recovery management (sleep/deloading/monitoring) runs across all phases.
Setting Pragmatic Success Metrics
Success in hedging the age tax is not “getting back to your 30-year-old power,” but rather “flattening the decline curve as much as possible and defending the three intervenable fronts to the best of your ability.” Comparing absolute numbers against your past self will lead to ongoing frustration; comparing against “the same-age version of yourself who doesn’t do these interventions,” the gap will be startlingly large—that gap is the value of this structure.
