Reverse periodization builds the speed ceiling first, then uses aerobic volume to “extend” how long that ceiling can be sustained—theoretically bringing peak form closer to race day.
A Natural Fit for Indoor Trainers
Winter sessions of 60–75 minutes indoors are well suited to intervals like 5×3 minutes @110–120% FTP, and reverse periodization conveniently places this high-intensity work in a season when long rides aren’t feasible.
Who It Suits—and Who Should Avoid It
Best for: athletes facing harsh winters, targeting races from July to September, and with at least two years of training experience. Not for: complete beginners (who lack the aerobic base and are more prone to injury) or those with spring race seasons.
A 24-Week Reverse Periodization Framework
Weeks 1–8 in winter (speed ceiling): two indoor interval sessions per week, e.g., 6×3’ @115% FTP, 5×4’ @110%, plus running intervals of 4×3’ @5K pace; weekly volume is only 6–8h but intensity-dense. Weeks 9–16 in spring (volume conversion): cut intervals to once a week to keep them fresh, build long rides from 90 minutes up to 4h week by week, extend long runs to 1:45, make race-pace tempo the main course, and raise weekly volume to 10–13h. Weeks 17–24 before race day (specificity + taper): center on long bricks at race intensity factor, with a 50% taper in the final two weeks. The key discipline is “maintain speed without chasing more, build aerobic volume without overreaching.”

My take on training sequencing: there’s no best periodization—only the one that best fits your climate and race calendar. Reverse periodization has saved many of my athletes who can only ride the trainer in winter—don’t let the textbook order box you in.
