FTP Isn’t Everything for Triathletes

Why IM Should Look at Aerobic Threshold Rather Than FTP

IM bike intensity is far below FTP, falling in the fat-oxidation-dominant zone. Using aerobic threshold (VT1/LT1) to set IM power targets is closer to metabolic reality than using FTP percentages.

Fatigue Resistance: The Overlooked Truth

Two people with the same FTP can differ greatly in the power they can sustain after 3 hours. By retesting 20-minute power after prolonged effort, you can quantify your “decay rate” and know how much to hold back in the latter part of the race.

Testing Schedule

  • FTP: 20-minute test ×0.95, or ramp test
