Sun Moon Lake Cycling Path: A 29 km International-Class Lakeside Route Test Ride

A Lakeside Route Named by CNN

The Sun Moon Lake Cycling Path spans approximately 29 km in total, with the proportion of dedicated bike lanes increasing year by year. The most iconic Xiangshan section is built over the water and was once selected by CNN Travel as one of the “World’s 10 Most Beautiful Bike Paths.” Its charm lies not in the distance, but in the way the lake scenery changes every 500 meters.

Section Breakdown

Section Distance Terrain Characteristics Highlights
Shuishe → Xiangshan 3.4 km Flat, over-water bike path Yongjie Tongxin Bridge, Xiangshan Visitor Center
Xiangshan → Toushe 6 km Mostly gentle climbs Toushe Floating Wetlands
Yueh Lake Loop 8 km Moderate rolling terrain Crescent Bay, Ita Thao
Wenwu Temple Section 5 km Concentrated short steep climbs Year Ladder Trail, lakeside viewpoints

Xiangshan Section: Over-Water Bike Path

A section of the Xiangshan stretch features a wooden trestle bridge built directly over the lake surface, making riders feel as if they are floating on water—it is the signature highlight of the entire route. From 6 to 8 in the morning, when the mist has not yet dissipated and tourists are fewest, is the golden hour for photography.

The Wenwu Temple Section Is the Ultimate Leg Test

Don’t be fooled by the word “lakeside”—the area around Wenwu Temple features a series of short, steep climbs with a maximum gradient approaching 10%, making it the only stretch where riders will get off and walk their bikes. Beginners can opt to take a boat from Ita Thao to skip this section.

One-Day Clockwise Ride Breakdown

Most riders depart from Shuishe Pier and go counterclockwise, but going clockwise (Shuishe → Wenwu Temple → Ita Thao → Toushe → Xiangshan → Shuishe) places the only hard climb at the front of the ride when energy levels are highest. Reference pacing from actual rides: for the full 29 km, including photo stops and refueling, beginners take about 3.5 hours, while intermediate riders tackling the Wenwu Temple climb take about 2 hours. The three must-stop points along the way are Yongjie Tongxin Bridge (about 25 minutes into the ride), Xuanguang Temple Pier (about 1 hour in, where you can try the A-Po tea eggs), and the Xiangshan Administration Center (about 2.5 hours in, best for architecture and reflections). For the climb before Wenwu Temple—about 1.2 km long with an average gradient of 8% and a steepest section of 10%—it’s recommended to shift to the easiest gear (suggested 34T chainring paired with a 28T or larger cassette) and spin your way up with cadence rather than muscling through.

Timing and Seasons

Sun Moon Lake sits at an elevation of about 748 meters, making it over 5 degrees Celsius cooler than the lowlands in summer. During the annual mass swim event around the Mid-Autumn Festival, the lakeside is extremely crowded, and riding is not recommended. The best months are March to May and October to November, when the weather is stable and visibility is high.

Supplies and Transfers

Shuishe Pier and Ita Thao are the two main supply hubs, with convenience stores, bike rental shops, and restaurants all readily available. If you don’t want to ride the full loop, the lake’s passenger ferries can carry both people and bikes, with hop-on-hop-off connections between Xiangshan, Shuishe, and Ita Thao. One-way ferry fares range from about NT$100 to 300, with an additional fee typically required for bringing a bike.

Who It’s For

The lakeside route features gentle gradients and a short total distance, making it ideal for families and beginner riders. Advanced cyclists can treat it as a mid-elevation warm-up route before extending their ride onward to Yuchi or Puli.

Sun Moon Lake should not be treated as a KOM segment to be “finished quickly.” It is a mirror—the slower you ride, the more reflections it gives back to you. Slow down, and only then will you truly see it.
