Riding into a World-Class Gorge
The Taroko Gorge section (Provincial Highway 8) runs from Xincheng/Taroko Gate upstream along the Liwu River to Tianxiang, about 30 km with a cumulative climb of roughly 480 meters. Flanking this stretch are marble gorges carved hundreds of meters deep by the Liwu River—a density and scale that rank among the world’s finest. Many international cyclists list it as a must-ride in Taiwan.
Section Highlights
| Section | Distance | Highlights | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taroko Gate → Swallow Grotto | 9 km | Shakadang, Eternal Spring Shrine | Dense tunnels |
| Swallow Grotto → Tunnel of Nine Turns | 6 km | Potholes, narrowest point of the gorge | High rockfall risk |
| Tunnel of Nine Turns → Tianxiang | 15 km | Cimu Bridge, Tianxiang Terrace | Open views |
Tunnel and Rockfall Safety
The gorge section has numerous tunnels, some without lighting—be sure to carry bright front and rear lights plus reflective gear. The Tunnel of Nine Turns to Swallow Grotto stretch is a rockfall hotspot and may be closed after earthquakes or heavy rain. Check park announcements before setting out, and wear a helmet when passing through designated sections if necessary.
Practical Tunnel-Riding Checklist
The Taroko Gorge section has more than a dozen tunnels; the longest stretches several hundred meters with curves and no lighting inside—the most underestimated risk on this route. Turn the following actions into reflexes:
- Light setup: Front light recommended at 400 lumens or more in steady-on mode; rear light set to solid (not flashing—flashing makes distance judgment harder in tunnels)
- Before entering: Take off sunglasses or switch to clear lenses, otherwise instant darkness is like riding with your eyes closed
- While riding: Stay right, hold a straight line, don’t hug the tunnel wall (walls often have loose gravel and drainage gutters); if you hear vehicles behind, don’t swerve suddenly
- Passing: Never overtake inside tunnels; when meeting tour buses, pull over and slow down proactively
- Exiting: Sudden bright light can briefly blind you—anticipate the road shape and slow down before exiting
The 6 km from Tunnel of Nine Turns to Swallow Grotto is a rockfall hotspot; the park often closes it after earthquakes or heavy rain. Entry is strictly forbidden in rainy conditions—there is no flexibility on this point.
Timing Recommendations
Between 6 and 8 a.m., before tour buses enter, is the safest and most peaceful window. In the afternoon, gorge light dims and traffic increases. Rainy conditions are strictly off-limits—rockfall risk multiplies.
Why International Riders List It as a Must-Ride
The Taroko Gorge section serves as the opening highlight of Taiwan’s annual KOM Challenge (Taiwan KOM), drawing numerous professional and amateur riders from Europe, the US, and Japan. The consensus among international cyclists: in terms of combining “scale × density × road accessibility” of marble gorges, very few places worldwide can match it. Here, the Liwu River has carved vertical rock walls with hundreds of meters of elevation difference, and the road snakes right along the valley floor. This sense of “a man-made road embedded in millions of years of geology” is the core reason it keeps appearing on international route lists. That’s why the quiet early-morning hours without tour buses are especially precious—a rare window to enjoy a world-class gorge almost alone.
Supplies
Tianxiang has a visitor center, shops, and lodging—the only complete resupply point in the gorge section. Fill up on water at Xincheng/Taroko Gate before entering. There is almost no resupply mid-gorge, so be sure to carry at least 1.5 liters before heading in.
Going Further
From Tianxiang you can continue toward Xibao, Luoshao, and Bilu Sacred Tree, eventually joining the high-mountain section of the Central Cross-Island Highway—but pay attention to access controls and plan your energy accordingly.
Riding in Taroko, you suddenly feel very small. When the Liwu River has spent millions of years carving this corridor, all we can do is pass through quietly, leave no trace, and carry that awe with us for a lifetime.
