25m Short Course vs 50m Long Course: What’s the Real Difference in Training Strategy?

Introduction

Most sports centers in Taiwan’s counties and cities have 25m short-course pools, while the National Sports Training Center and Asian/Olympic Games venues use 50m long-course pools. Both are swimming, but the two pool types affect your fitness, technique, and psychology in completely different ways. This article helps you plan cross-pool-type training.

1. Physical Differences

Comparison Item 25m Pool 50m Pool
Turns per 1500m 59 29
Wall push-off contribution High Medium
Continuous swimming time Short Long
Technical flaws revealed Less obvious Obvious
Heart rate fluctuation Large Steady

2. Training Significance

  • Short course: Suitable for practicing turns, explosive power, and interval workouts.
  • Long course: Suitable for practicing technical stability, aerobic endurance, and race pacing.

3. Sample Workouts

Short-Course Sample Workout (25m)

  • Warm-up 400m
  • 8×100m EVF drill, switch drill every 50m
  • 16×50m sprint R30
  • Cool-down 200m

Long-Course Sample Workout (50m)

  • Warm-up 600m
  • 6×200m CSS pace
  • 4×100m race pace
  • Cool-down 300m

4. Open Water Equivalence

There are no walls to push off in open water, so long-course training is closer to actual racing than short-course training. It is recommended that triathletes do 2/3 of their training in long-course pools, combined with 1 open-water session per month.

5. Practical Recommendations

  1. Cross-pool-type testing: Do a 100m TT once a month, testing in both 25m and 50m pools. A gap within 5 seconds means your technique is consistent.
  2. In a 50m pool, it is recommended to use a Tempo Trainer to control stroke rate.
  3. Mental preparation: The 50m pool often makes beginners feel “this pool is so long.” Start by adapting with 4×50m.
  4. Six weeks before a race, increase the proportion of long-course training to 70%.

6. Cross-Pool-Type Testing Example

Before your next visit to the 50m pool at the Zuoying National Sports Training Center, you can first do a complete test at a 25m pool near your home:

  • 400m TT
  • 1500m TT
  • 100m × 5 average speed

After arriving at the 50m pool, do the same tests and compare the differences:

Metric 25m 50m Difference
400m TT 6:00 6:08 +8s
1500m TT 24:00 24:30 +30s
SWOLF 35 38 +3

If the gap is reasonable (5–10%), your technique is genuine; if the gap is too large, you need to strengthen your training in the 50m pool.

Conclusion

Don’t let “there’s only a short-course pool near my home” become an excuse, and don’t think “long course is the only real swimming.” Both pool types have their training value, and combining them properly is the way to become a well-rounded swimmer. Next time you plan your training cycle, include pool type in your planning, and you’ll find yourself improving faster.
