Road Cycling Climbing-Specific Training: Scientific Preparation for the Wuling (武嶺) Challenge

單車訓練

Introduction

Taiwan’s “holy lands of climbing,” Wuling (武嶺, elevation 3,275m, total elevation gain 3,300m+) and Tataka (塔塔加, elevation 2,610m), are the ultimate challenges for road cycling climbers. Breaking 4 hours on Wuling or 3 hours on Tataka takes more than just FTP — the ability to sustain Z3-Z4 over a long period is the key.

Key Metrics for Climbing

  • Power-to-weight ratio (W/kg): The decisive factor in climbing. FTP/body weight ≥ 3.5 is needed to challenge Wuling within 5 hours
  • Long-duration NP (Normalized Power): The ability to sustain an NP/FTP ratio of 0.75-0.85 over 3-5 hours
  • Pacing control: Don’t blow up early — save your legs for the back half
  • Body temperature management: The difference between the cold high mountains and the hot lowlands can exceed 15°C

Power-to-Weight Ratio Reference for Wuling

Finish Time W/kg Required FTP (70kg rider)
5 hours 2.8-3.0 196-210W
4 hours 3.5-3.8 245-266W
3.5 hours 4.0-4.3 280-301W
Under 3 hours 4.5+ 315W+

Climbing-Specific Training Sessions

Long climb endurance: Find a continuous 30-60 minute climb and ride the entire thing in Z3 (76-88% of FTP). In Taiwan, good options include the North Cross-Island Highway from Baling to Mingchi (about 60 minutes), or the Alishan Highway from Chukou to Shizhuo (90 minutes).

Simulating Wuling: On a smart trainer, Zwift’s Alpe du Zwift (12.2km, average gradient 8.5%) is the best indoor simulation — ride it at full effort for an hour.

Climbing intervals: 5 minutes of Z5 uphill x 5 repeats, coasting down to recover between sets. Fengguizui, climbed from Wanli, or the Shiding-Pinglin section, both work well.

12-Week Wuling Preparation Template

Phase Weeks Focus
Base 1-4 Accumulate Z2 long rides, at least 8 hours per week
Build 5-8 Add 2x20 intervals and climbing intervals to raise FTP
Specific 9-10 Simulate the full Wuling effort (on a trainer or outdoors)
Peak 11 One full Wuling ride in real conditions (3 weeks before the event)
Taper 12 Cut volume by 50% while keeping intensity

Weight Management

Start losing weight 3 months before your climbing season, aiming for 0.3-0.5 kg per week:

  • Losing 1 kg of body weight ≈ about 45 seconds faster on the Wuling climb
  • Don’t go on an extreme diet — your FTP will drop along with your weight
  • Don’t try to cut weight during high-volume training blocks; the base phase is the golden window for losing weight

Practical Advice

First, training must include real climbs — a trainer alone can’t build the “postural adaptation” and “heat dissipation patterns” your body needs. Do at least one outdoor climbing session per week. Second, pacing strategy: don’t push the intensity on the first 30km of Wuling before Qingjing — the real race only begins from Qingjing at 1,750m. Third, fueling rhythm: for a long event like Wuling, take in 50-60g of carbohydrate every 30 minutes and drink 150ml of an electrolyte drink every 15 minutes. Fourth, altitude acclimatization: above 2,500m, VO2max drops by 8-12% — riding up the mountain once the week before can help you adapt to the lower oxygen. Fifth, equipment weight savings: an aerodynamic wheelset, a lightweight frame, and precisely calculated nutrition quantities all help — a total bike weight under 7.5kg is highly competitive.

Conclusion

Wuling is not a mountain for the gifted — it’s a mountain for the well-prepared. Twelve weeks of solid training, precise stacking of FTP and body weight, repeated rehearsal of pacing strategy, plus familiarity with the terrain — every 4-hour finisher earned it through discipline. Put a picture of Wuling on the wall in front of your trainer, and ask yourself with every ride: “Does today’s training bring me closer to Wuling?” If the answer is yes, keep going. If not, adjust.
