Why Amateur Riders Often Do “Threshold Training”

The most common mistake among amateur riders is “spending all their time in Z3”—riding too hard to be Z2, yet not hard enough to reach Z4, resulting in fatigue accumulation without significant progress. Reasons:

  • No power meter, riding by feel
  • Riding with friends, following the group pace
  • Ego getting in the way, thinking “Z2 is too slow”
  • Not knowing how slow Z2 should be
