Wuling Single Ascent: Complete Comparison of the North/South/East Routes

騎行路線

Introduction

Wuling, at an elevation of 3,275 meters, is the highest point on Taiwan’s road network and is hailed as the “Holy Land of Cycling in Taiwan.” The three main single-day climbing routes—the Northern Route (Puli), the Southern Route (Shuili), and the Eastern Route (Taroko)—each represent a different dimension of challenge. This article provides an in-depth comparison of the three routes to help you choose your next goal.

Basic Route Comparison

Route Starting Point Distance Total Elevation Gain Average Gradient Estimated Time
Northern Route Puli 55 km 2700 m 4.9% 4–6 hr
Southern Route Shuili 60 km 2800 m 4.7% 4.5–6.5 hr
Eastern Route Taroko Arch 86 km 3275 m 3.8% 6–9 hr

Northern Route (Puli → Wuling)

The most mainstream Wuling challenge route, taking Provincial Highway 14 then turning onto Provincial Highway 14A. Starting from central Puli at approximately 425 meters, the route passes through Wushe, Cingjing Farm, Cuifeng, Yuanfeng, Kunyang, and Wuling.

  • Road Condition Advantages: Smooth pavement, complete supply points, and food and water resupply available at Cingjing.
  • Key Challenges: The 14% short steep climb from Renzhiguan to Wushe, the continuous ascent from Cingjing to Cuifeng, and the sustained 7% gradient over the final 5 kilometers before Wuling.
  • Scenery: Puli Basin → Wushe morning mist → Cingjing pastures → Cuifeng sea of clouds → Yuanfeng sunset → Wuling sunrise.

Southern Route (Shuili → Wuling)

From Shuili via Xinyi, the New Central Cross-Island Highway, and Tataka, then turning onto Provincial Highway 14A to reach Wuling. In practice, however, “Southern Route single-day climb” usually refers to Shuili → Tataka → Lulin Mountain → Wuling.

  • Road Condition Advantages: Spectacular scenery, light traffic, and rich wildlife (Mikado pheasants, Formosan macaques).
  • Key Challenges: Long distance, sparse supply points, and the need to descend and climb again after reaching Tataka at 2,610 meters.
  • Scenery: Yushan mountain range, Dongpu Hot Springs, Tataka sunrise, and ancient trees above the sea of clouds.
  • Special Section: The 30-kilometer continuous climb from Heshe to Tataka is one of the longest sustained climbing sections in Taiwan.

Eastern Route (Taroko → Wuling)

Climbing from the Taroko Arch (0 meters elevation) to Wuling at 3,275 meters, this is one of the rare “sea level to 3,275m” single routes in the world, and it is on the bucket list of international cyclists.

  • Road Condition Advantages: The most magnificent scenery, offering everything from gorges to seas of clouds and then to high-mountain grasslands in one ride.
  • Key Challenges: The extremely long 86-kilometer distance, the sustained average 5% gradient from Tiansiang to Dayuling, and hypoxia from the rapid elevation gain.
  • Scenery: Swallow Grotto, Tunnel of Nine Turns, Cimu Bridge, Xincheng and Tiansiang hot springs, Dayuling, and Hehuan Mountain.
  • Special Recommendation: It is recommended to split this into two days—Day 1 from Taroko to Dayuling with an overnight stay, and Day 2 from Dayuling to Wuling.

Practical Advice

  • For Beginners: Choose the Northern Route for its complete supply points and the most familiar road conditions. You can also start from Cingjing to shorten the challenge.
  • For Intermediate Riders: The Southern Route offers a high-mountain experience, but you need to bring ample supplies.
  • For the Ultimate Challenge: Completing the Eastern Route in a single day is an international-level feat; it is recommended to arrange a support vehicle.
  • Weather Warning: Wuling is often shrouded in fog in the afternoon, reducing visibility on the descent. It is recommended to reach the summit before 12:00 PM.
  • Gear Recommendations: Warm clothing (temperature difference between Wuling and urban areas can reach 20°C), a headlamp, energy refills, and emergency contact numbers.

Conclusion

The three Wuling routes are the “graduation exam” for cyclists in Taiwan. Whichever one you choose, it is a journey of dialogue with yourself. The Northern Route is the most complete, the Southern Route the most serene, and the Eastern Route the most magnificent. When you stand before the 3,275-meter marker and gaze across Taiwan’s mountain ranges, you will understand why Wuling is the holy land in the hearts of countless cyclists.
