Heat Acclimation: The Hidden Advantage for Taiwanese Cyclists

Introduction

Heat acclimation/acclimatization is a systematic training approach for endurance athletes competing in high temperatures. For Taiwanese cyclists, this is not an “advanced option” but an essential year-round survival skill. A systematic 10–14 day heat acclimation period produces significant adaptations across three domains: hematological, cardiovascular, and thermoregulatory.

Physiological Changes from Heat Acclimation

After 10–14 days of systematic heat exposure:

Decay of Heat Acclimation

  • 1 week without heat exposure: 50% of adaptations lost
  • 2–3 weeks without exposure: adaptations almost completely lost
  • Therefore, continuous maintenance is required—a single training block is not enough

Practical Recommendations

  • Begin systematic heat acclimation in March–April to prepare for summer racing season
  • During heat acclimation, hydrate with added sodium (approximately 700–1000mg sodium per L)
  • Gradually increase heat exposure time over 5 consecutive days, with a full 90-minute session on the weekend
  • Post-exercise heat acclimation: immediately after training, soak in 40°C water for 30 minutes
  • Start intensifying 14 days before race day; taper 3–5 days out but maintain brief daily heat exposure

Conclusion

Heat acclimation is a hidden advantage for Taiwanese cyclists compared to athletes from other regions. Living in the subtropics year-round, our baseline heat acclimation is already higher than that of European and American athletes. But natural adaptation ≠ systematic adaptation—deliberately designed heat acclimation can further improve hot-weather performance by 5–10%. For Taiwanese cyclists competing year-round, this is a competitive edge that requires no additional equipment.
