Uphill Technique: How to Find the Switch Point Between Running and Walking?

單車訓練

Introduction

UTMB champion Kilian Jornet also switches to power hiking on certain slopes. For trail runners in Taiwan, on the final stretch of Qixing Mountain’s main peak, the scree slope of Yushan’s main peak, and the steep climb up Hehuan North Peak—should you run or walk? This article gives you an objective set of criteria for deciding.

1. Why “Running Isn’t Always Fastest”

Once the gradient exceeds a certain threshold, running consumes 1.5–2 times the energy of power hiking, yet is only 10–15% faster—an extremely poor energy economy. Academic research shows that most people’s “optimal switch point” falls between a 12–15% gradient.

Gradient Recommended Mode Heart Rate Zone
<8% Run Z2–Z3
8–12% Depends on the individual Z3
12–15% Run/walk mix Z3–Z4
>15% Power hiking primarily Z3
>25% Hands-on-knees hiking Z2–Z3

2. Three Objective Switch Signals

Besides gradient, you can also use these three signals to decide:

  • Cadence signal: If cadence drops below 140, running efficiency has collapsed
  • Heart rate signal: If heart rate spikes past the upper edge of Z4 and keeps climbing, exceeding the threshold you can sustain
  • Breathing signal: If you can’t maintain a 3:3 step-breath ratio and breathing becomes erratic

If any one of these appears, switch to power hiking immediately.

3. Proper Power Hiking Form

Power hiking is not “strolling”—it requires technique:

  • Hands on knees (power hiking), using upper-body strength
  • Short stride, quick cadence (120–130)
  • Slight forward lean, eyes looking 2–3 meters ahead
  • On steep slopes, use a “switchback” pattern to reduce the effective gradient

4. Switching Recommendations for Classic Taiwan Routes

  • Qixing Mountain Trail: Power hike the wooden stair sections, run the dirt paths
  • Yushan Main Peak: From Paiyun Lodge to the main peak’s scree slope, power hike almost the entire way
  • Hehuan North Peak: Alternate run/walk on the steep early section, power hike the final 200m before the summit
  • Nenggao Andongjun: The Qilai–Nenggao section has large elevation changes; switch based on gradient

Practical Advice

  • Deliberately practice “run/walk transitions” in training to avoid mental struggle on race day
  • Use a heart rate monitor to set an upper-limit alarm (e.g., upper edge of Z4)
  • Carrying trekking poles on >15% sections can save 10–20% more energy
  • Don’t compare yourself to companions: just because others can run doesn’t mean you should

Conclusion

Smart trail runners know how to “let go of the obsession with running.” When you can switch to power hiking on Hehuan North Peak’s steep slopes without any mental burden, you’ve mastered true trail running technique.
