Trail Running Power Meter Stryd Application: Power Training Works on Trails Too

Introduction

Power training has long been the gold standard in cycling, and running power has also rapidly gained popularity over the past five years. Stryd is currently the mainstream running power meter. However, the irregular terrain of trail running makes power readings more complex—this article teaches you how to interpret them correctly.

1. Basic Concepts of Running Power

Running power = the energy output (in watts) required to propel your body forward and overcome terrain resistance. It integrates:

  • Pace
  • Body weight
  • Gradient
  • Wind resistance
  • Ground type

Compared with heart rate, power responds more instantly (no 30–60 second delay) and is unaffected by caffeine, sleep, or mood.

2. Challenges of Trail Running Power

  • Z5 (VO2max): 105–120% CP30

For trail running, maintain Z2 on LSD runs and push Z4–Z5 on hill repeats.

4. Practical Application: Yangmingshan Qixing Mountain

Using a 90-minute training session as an example:

  • 10 min warm-up Z1: 100W
  • 30 min uphill Z2–Z3: 250–320W
  • 5 min steep climb before the summit Z4: 350W
  • 25 min downhill Z1–Z2: 150–220W
  • 20 min easy jog back Z2: 240W

Using power to pace is more precise than heart rate.

5. Limitations of Stryd on Trails

  • Inaccurate readings on snow and deep mud
  • Needs recalibration at high altitude (>3000m)
  • Carrying a large backpack affects running form, inflating power readings
  • A hard fall may cause damage

Practical Advice

  • First run with Stryd on roads for 4 weeks to establish a CP30 baseline
  • For trail running, use a dual-metric approach: “power as the primary, heart rate as the secondary”
  • Set a power ceiling in races to avoid going out too hard early on
  • Export and analyze data trends monthly
  • Don’t obsess over instantaneous readings—look at the 30-second moving average
