Introduction
In the three-layer mountain layering system, the mid-layer is the most often overlooked. It is responsible for “trapping warm air” — when you stop to rest, it determines whether you are warm or shivering within 5 minutes. Fleece and PrimaLoft are the two mainstream options, each with its own strengths.
Characteristics of Fleece
Fleece is made from brushed polyester fibers and is divided into 100/200/300 grades by weight.
- 100 weight: Thin fleece, for warmth while moving, around 450 g
- 200 weight: Mid-weight, worn when resting at a mountain hut, 550 g
- 300 weight: Heavyweight, for winter camps, 700 g+
Its strengths are durability, easy washing, low cost, and retaining warmth even when wet; its weaknesses are poor compressibility and no wind resistance. Common brands: Patagonia R1, Mont-bell Chameece, Polartec series.
Characteristics of PrimaLoft
PrimaLoft is a synthetic insulation that mimics down, using a microfiber structure to trap air. It is lightweight, highly compressible, and water-repellent. The Gold, Silver, and Black grades correspond to different warmth levels.
Strengths: It retains 80% of its warmth when wet — this is its biggest selling point. It is cheaper than down and lighter than fleece.
Weaknesses: Lower durability than fleece; fibers can clump after repeated washing.
| Item | Fleece 200 | PrimaLoft Gold 80g |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | 550 g | 350 g |
| Compressibility | Poor | Excellent |
| Warmth when wet | Medium | High |
| Breathability | High | Medium |
| Durability | High | Medium |
On the Move vs. at Camp
This is the key question in choosing:
- Wearing while moving: Choose Fleece (breathable, no overheating)
- For camp and mountain huts: Choose PrimaLoft (warm, compressible, moisture-resistant)
A common setup for Taiwan’s Hundred Peaks is “Fleece + PrimaLoft vest” — wear the fleece while moving, then take it off and put on the vest when you reach the hut.
The Mid-Layer’s Position in the Three-Layer System
Onion layering: base layer wicks sweat → mid-layer insulates → outer layer blocks wind and water. The choice of mid-layer directly affects overall temperature regulation. On the Qilai Main/North Ridge at 3,500 m, when setting out at 2 AM for a summit push, a failed mid-layer leads directly to hypothermia.
Practical Recommendations
Recommended combinations:
- Entry level: Decathlon Forclaz MT100 Fleece + Uniqlo PuffTech vest
- Intermediate: Patagonia R1 Pullover + Patagonia Nano Puff
- Advanced: Arc’teryx Atom LT + Mountain Equipment Eclipse Hooded
Budget allocation suggestion: base layer 25%, mid-layer 30%, outer layer 45%.
Conclusion
Fleece and PrimaLoft are not an either/or choice — they are meant to be used together. First determine your route type (windy ridgelines vs. rainy forests), then decide on your mid-layer setup. Taiwan’s Hundred Peaks require them year-round, so this investment is absolutely worthwhile.
