Trekking Poles: Three-Section vs Z-Fold — A Complete Comparison of Folding Mechanisms and Materials
Introduction
When descending, your knees absorb impacts equivalent to 3–7 times your body weight, making trekking poles a pressure-relieving tool. Taiwan’s Hundred Peaks feature many long descents, from Qilai Nanhua to Batongguan, and without trekking poles you’ll be in agony. But which type of trekking pole should you choose?
Two Mainstream Folding Mechanisms
Three-Section Telescopic: Traditional design, three tube sections nested together, secured by twist-lock or flip-lock. Offers a wide adjustment range (65–140 cm), with a collapsed length of around 65 cm.
Z-Fold (Folding): Similar to tent poles, three sections connected by an internal elastic cord, folding down to 30–40 cm. However, the length adjustment range is smaller, with most models only allowing ±10 cm.
| Item | Three-Section Telescopic | Z-Fold |
|---|---|---|
| Collapsed length | 60–70 cm | 35–40 cm |
| Weight | 250–400 g | 230–350 g |
| Length adjustment | Large (75 cm range) | Small (±10 cm) |
| Strength | High | Medium |
| Deployment speed | Slow | Fast |
| Maintenance | Easy | More difficult |
Which Is More Suitable for Taiwanese Hikers?
Three-Section Telescopic is more versatile: it switches flexibly between suburban hills and Hundred Peaks, shortening below hip level for flat terrain and lengthening for steep slopes. On descents, you can extend it 5 cm with one click for better impact absorption.
Z-Fold is more portable: it fits into daypack side pockets and trail running vest pockets. It suits players who need frequent stowing and mix hiking with trail running.
Materials: Aluminum Alloy vs Carbon Fiber
- 7075 Aluminum Alloy: Impact-resistant, can be bent back into shape after damage, 250–400 g, priced NT$1,500–3,500
- Carbon Fiber: Lightweight, 200–300 g, but snaps under lateral stress (and cannot be repaired once broken), NT$3,000–6,000
For snow season and technical terrain, aluminum alloy is strongly recommended; carbon fiber suits those chasing weight reduction.
Grip Materials
- Cork: Absorbs sweat, conforms to your hand, most comfortable
- EVA Foam: Light, non-slip, low cost
- Rubber: Durable and non-slip but traps sweat; not recommended for summer
Snow Baskets and Powder Baskets
In snow season, trekking poles need a 90mm powder basket (vs the standard 35mm) fitted at the base to prevent sinking into the snow surface. Essential for Snow Mountain snow season and Hehuan Mountain snow training.
Practical Recommendations
Recommended for Taiwan’s Hundred Peaks:
- Entry-level: Black Diamond Trail (aluminum three-section, NT$2,800)
- Advanced: Leki Makalu FX Carbon (carbon fiber Z-fold, NT$5,500)
- Heavy load: Komperdell Ti.Cloud Trekking (titanium alloy, NT$3,800)
Conclusion
Trekking poles are not a luxury—they’re insurance for your knees. I recommend buying an aluminum three-section pole first, then evaluating whether to upgrade to carbon or Z-fold once you’re familiar with using them. On the long descents of Nenggao Andongjun and Nanhu Mountain, your knees will thank you.
